Lead HVAC Technician

Job Description:

Responsible for the safe and effective operation, installation, maintenance and repair of all heating and cooling components on campus and assisting with refrigeration systems repair, installation, and maintenance.

Salary is $41,371 per year, plus excellent benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Work with others and independently to repair, install, and maintain campus HVAC components, and systems. These may include, but are not limited to, pumps, electric motors, fans, air handlers, electrical control systems, water level controls, thermostats, AC and DC systems, pneumatic control systems, emergency generators, and other related equipment.

2. Troubleshoot systems and safely isolate failed components.

3. Change, repair, and install pumps, electric motors, and related equipment as required.

4. Assume primary responsibility for preventative maintenance on campus HVAC equipment.

5. Participate in the operation and management of water treatment as related to industrial heating and cooling systems.

6. Ensure compliance with safe work practices as outlined by campus standards and OSHA regulations.

7. Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the University.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Education, Training and Skills-

1. Graduation from high school or equivalent. Trade school or college level coursework preferred.

2. Training or experience in the related field.

3. Working knowledge of the following computer programs:

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Google platform

    4. Demonstrated leadership qualities, strong human relations abilities, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

    5. Knowledge of State and Federal regulations applicable to the area of responsibility.

    6. Attend training and receive certifications related to position, including software training.

    7. Must have the ability to communicate clearly, in English, both written and verbal, with Facilities Management staff regarding critical information, shift occurrences, work orders, problems, upcoming needs, and tasks beyond the individual's scope and capability.

    8. Must have a current Utah Driver's License and present a neat, professional appearance with clothing appropriate to work assignments.

    Experience-

    1. Four years of experience in the HVAC or closely related field.

    2. Refrigeration experience with EPA Universal Refrigerant Handlers Certification preferred, but not required.

    3. Demonstrated experience with pump rebuilding or replacement, seal fitment, shaft alignment, bearing replacement in electric motors and other shaft-drive equipment, and troubleshooting.

    4. Proven ability to complete tasks and assignments with excellent workmanship and code knowledge.

    5. Proven outstanding work ethic demonstrated through previous employment or schooling.

    6. Overall excellent mechanical aptitude as demonstrated by previous work experience.

    Working Conditions-

    1. Work indoors or out, in all seasons, often in industrial settings typical to a higher education setting.

    2. Must be able to work overhead and in confined conditions and work from ladders, scaffolding, and elevated platforms, as required.

    3. Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies and reside within 20 minutes of SUU for emergency response.

    4. Travel in a university vehicle as required, sometimes overnight.

    5. Must be able to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of the university.
