Job Description
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
To perform specialized diagnostic bacteriology and mycology laboratory and research procedures.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
- Perform clinical and research laboratory tests and investigations in the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, Bacteriology/Mycology section (Biosafety Level 2). Such activities include processing and inoculation of clinical specimens (tissues, fluids and swabs) onto appropriate media; isolation of bacteria and fungi from primary plates; identification of organisms using biochemical techniques or automated equipment; and set-up of antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Work in a biosafety cabinet may be required.
- Learn and perform specialized bacterial testing to include fluorescent antibody staining and bacterial serogrouping.
- Participate in internal and external proficiency testing required to maintain laboratory accreditation.
- Set up, operate, and maintain standard equipment. May train and/or supervise student workers in operation of equipment and performance of procedures.
- Participate in media inventory and FIFO protocols.
- Be willing to be trained in Environmental Health and Safety procedures and to follow EHS and biosafety protocols.
- Activities require accuracy, strict attention to detail and compliance with existing Quality Assurance and Biosafety standards.
Salary Range: $15.75 - $21.50/hour, commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of progressively responsible laboratory or research experience is preferred. One or more years of college-level biology, microbiology or biochemistry course work is preferred.
