Day in a life:

The Medical Assistant, under general supervision, assists patients within an outpatient primary care clinic. Responsible for duties associated with opening and closing clinic. Performs minor medical procedures including vaccination, blood draws, and specimen collection. Conducts basic office-based medical tasks, answers phones, provides information about clinic and services, and schedule patients' appointments. Serves as a medical instrument technician and performs other duties as required or requested.

How You Will Contribute:
  • Assist providers (physicians and family nurse practitioners) with day-to-day treatment and medical procedures.
  • Greet patients, ascertains the nature of their visit and direct to the appropriate area. Answers phones, provides information about clinic and services, and schedule patients' appointments. Responsible for duties associated with opening and closing clinic.
  • Responsible for cash handling and receipts for payment of services. Prepares documentation for daily deposit.
  • Input data concisely and accurately into the electronic medical records system for each patient. Scan documents and attach to electronic medical records.
  • Perform minor medical procedures to gather information on blood pressure, height, weight, and temperature. Perform CLIA waived laboratory testing and phlebotomy as assigned.
  • Perform as a member of the University Health Center and Student Engagement and Success team by participating in University functions, attending meetings, etc.
  • Administers injections and dispenses medications as ordered by the Physician or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Transfers specimens, documents testing and lab results in medical records, and documents other activities in the electronic medical records.
  • Stocks patient care rooms and nurses' stations weekly and as needed.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes medical instruments, including endoscopes.
  • Participates in documentation of patient care.
  • Assists with inventory, office equipment maintenance, and the organization and upkeep of central nurses' stations.
  • Perform other duties as required or requested including, but not limited to: Serve on committees as requested. Perform as a member of the University Health Center / Division of Student Engagement and Success Team (participate in departmental and division staff meetings; promote excellent customer service and teamwork within department and division).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.


Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
  • Certified as a Medical Assistant
  • Ability to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within six months of employment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience providing patient care in an acute care setting.
  • Experience working in a university student health center.


Salary:
  • $14.42 - $15.84/Hourly
