Job Description

The Hartt School, a conservatory of Music, Dance, and Theatre at the University of Hartford, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music Composition. Successful candidates will demonstrate fluency with, and an array of strengths in, 21st century compositional concert music practices; have an established, stylistically and technically diverse practice, as enumerated in the qualifications below; and demonstrate an eagerness to shape and grow the Hartt Composition community. The ideal candidate will support and facilitate a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and growth and will have a passion for teaching.

Essential Job Duties

The successful candidate will serve as an integral part of the Hartt Composition community by teaching courses determined, in part, by the specific expertise of the applicant and including individual undergraduate through doctoral composition lessons. There will also be opportunities to teach in the innovative University Interdisciplinary Studies program. An active scholarly/research/artistic agenda with peer-reviewed publications, presentations, performances, or other accomplishments in music composition are expected for successful tenure and promotion. Service to the division, college, and university is performed while broadly advancing the discipline of music composition and will include advising and supervising masters’ theses and doctoral dissertations; supporting student activities through attendance at concerts and recitals, coordinating score calls, and facilitating collaborative and interdisciplinary special projects; developing curricula; serving on division, school, and/or university committees; and may include directing one of Hartt’s creative music ensembles. Other responsibilities include overseeing and participating in student recruitment, retention, and advising to enroll and maintain a strong, inclusive, and diverse student body.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree in music composition at the time of appointment. A completed doctorate in music composition at the time of appointment or equivalent experience is preferred. In assessing whether the requirement of "equivalent experience" has been met, we will consider the following: A composer/musician with a national or international reputation in performances, installations, commissions, recordings, and/or publications. A documented minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience in a college or university classroom, masterclass, workshop, and/or private studio setting. A demonstrated record of compositional production, performance, installation, recording and/or publication. Fluency with 21st century compositional concert music practices and areas of expertise to include at least two (2) of the following: Electro-acoustic music and interactive arts, collaborative projects, multimedia/gaming/sound design, sound art and related sonic installation practices, improvisation and open form experimental composition, familiarity with multiple creative traditions and practices (including popular/commercial music, arranging, and songwriting). Demonstrated eagerness to research, invent, and teach new avenues of compositional expression in this time of genre plurality. Evidence demonstrating the ability and desire to work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, faculty, staff, administration, and the public.

Preferred Qualifications: An active profile as a performer in addition to a robust and varied profile as composer is highly desirable.
