Responsibilities:
The Division of Mathematics and Sciences at Delta State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning in August 2023 (Fall term). The ideal candidate will have expertise in a field of genetics as well as teaching introductory and advanced biology courses. Strong preference will be given to candidates willing to perform research with undergraduate students. It is desirable that the candidate has interests that complement existing programs in the department.

The faculty member will be required to develop a nationally recognized research program in biomedical sciences, where stimulating research to encourage the creativity of undergraduates will be encouraged. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact extensively with Mississippi INBRE (msinbre.org), a network of colleges and universities throughout Mississippi that is dedicated towards improving the biomedical research infrastructure in the state. Mississippi INBRE network gives researchers access to cutting edge technologies, as well as mentorship for program development. Funds may be available through Mississippi INBRE for up to three years to develop a successful research program in biomedical sciences.

Other essential functions include pursuit of external grants, hold a minimum of 10 office hours per week, and perform service activities for the division, university, and community.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in genetics or related field. The applicant will need strong communication skills and a commitment to both teaching and research in a liberal arts environment. Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and undergraduate research is preferred.• An earned PhD with demonstrated broad training in genetics.
• Post-doctoral research in a genetics or related field is desired.
• Willingness to carry out research activities and pursue external funding.
• Post-secondary level teaching experience (documented by at least one letter of reference).
• Ability to teach upper level biomedical courses with a laboratory component, courses in introductory biology for majors, and an upper level course in his/her area of specialty.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level.
• Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Commitment to effective academic advisement.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Salary:
9 monthCommensurate with experience, qualifications, and university’s resources.
