About the Opportunity

The Database Administrator is responsible for all activities related to creation, administration, support, coordination and maintenance of database systems at Northeastern University. They will work with a team of other Database Administrators to provide database support for application or service initiatives and perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks to effectively create, manage, monitor, and tune production, test, and development databases and to support the needs of University services and on-demand computing. Database Administrators will support both on-premise and cloud-hosted (AWS RDS and Microsoft Azure) databases spanning a variety of technologies (Oracle, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL, etc.), and closely with developers, system administrators, and other Information Technology Services teams to accomplish these tasks. To ensure that essential services are provided to the university community, the Database Administrator will be required to work outside their regular working hours as needed and on a rotational on-call basis.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, with continuing studies, training or course work.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience with database administration, backup/restore procedures, and Structured Query Language (SQL). Familiarity with multiple platforms and the UNIX operating system. Experience with Microsoft Azure and/or Amazon RDS environments. Demonstrated continued professional growth and development. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • The ability to work with all levels of an organization.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Support
  • Provide 24/x7 on call database support.- Work outside regular hours to install patches, be available for regular weekend on call rotational support.
  • Provide guidance and knowledge with regards to new database software/utilities and technology. Install, manage and maintain databases on virtual server environments and high availability environments such as Microsoft Cluster Administrator, and Oracle's Real Active Clusters.
  • Manage Oracle Data Guard (Logical & Physical Standby databases). Administer advanced technology such as Oracle Streams.
  • Troubleshoot application and database problems. Assist application developers to optimize SQL statements and stored procedures for better performance, perform database load testing using Oracle Database Replay.
  • Provide Disaster Recovery support and database restores if required work with backup technologies such as RMAN, MS SQL Server Configuration manager, Logical and Physical Standby databases.


Database Management and Configuration
  • Perform database system/server configurations
  • Install and configure physical relational database environments for development, test/QA, and production across multiple platforms using MS SQL Server and Oracle Enterprise Server software
  • Provide guidance and direction to plan, implement and maintain database security and user accounts. Create or modify user accounts and database roles and other database objects. Manage and maintain application and database passwords using a hosted web based repository
  • Conduct data audits, track and report unusual or illegal activity. Manage logical and physical database configurations. Assist development teams in data modeling, ETL, designing data accesses methods in OLTP/OLAP environment. Maintain database objects such as tables, views, indexes, table spaces and database files
  • Evaluate Database storage requirements for current systems and future growth. Perform database space monitoring, analysis, and tuning
  • Facilitate system integration including sharing data across databases and integration of packaged databases with other corporate databases. Perform backups and recovery/restores across prod, test and dev environments.
  • Create data imports, data refreshes, and clone database environments.
  • Manage ERP database application upgrades and patches. Install Banner, ODS and other application patches and fixes as needed.
  • Manage Oracle Warehouse Builder service upgrade and patch in both server and client environments.
The expected hiring range for this position is USD $95,130 to USD $121,295, based upon the position's scope and responsibilities.
