Job Description

Postdoctoral Position in Cardiovascular Research, Virginia Tech, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, Johnstone lab.

Our research centers on translational studies in human blood vessel disease. We aim to understand the inflammation and cell signaling mechanisms associated with vascular disease. Our lab uses in vitro and in vivo approaches to define and develop novel therapeutics, peptides and nanobodies, and tests these on patient blood vessels received in collaboration with clinicians at Carilion Hospital. Our goal is to define new markers in vascular disease and design therapeutics with translational potential.

Experience: candidates with interest and experience in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:
• Cardiovascular disease
• Inflammation
• Proliferation
• Translational research
• In vivo/ ex vivo models of vascular disease
• Cell-cell signaling and protein interactions
• Molecular biology and protein engineering

Training:
• Training will be provided for all aspects related to the research
• We provide support to attend national and international conferences
• This position is fully funded. However, we value training and career progression, and successful applicants will be encouraged to cultivate independent funding (e.g. NIH F32, AHA). We will provide training and administrative support in grant writing and submission
• Provide opportunities to expand your research network by performing collaborative studies with national and international partners.

Responsibilities: The Postdoctoral associate will have responsibilities in the following areas:
• Research conceptualization: Coordinate the design and methodology of experiments
• Data analysis: Analyze and prepare research data for presentation
• Publication: Prepare data for peer-reviewed publication and conference attendance
• Project management: Training and supervising research personnel, grant writing

Required Qualifications

• PhD in cell/molecular biology or vascular physiology relevant fields e.g. vascular biology, immunology, physiology. PhD must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining.
• Prior experience in preparation of proposals, reports, and publications; presentation of research results
• Demonstrated experience in cell biology or vascular biology.

Preferred Qualifications

• A record of research excellence as demonstrated by peer reviewed publications and invited talks.
• Demonstrated work in interdisciplinary collaborative teams.
• Experience in the development of patents
