Position Summary: A Police Sergeant is a first-line supervisor who plans, assigns, reviews, and evaluates the work of others. A Sergeant trains officers, coordinates activities, participates in police operations, and performs related work as required. Leads, supports and supervises a team of officers and staff to maximize employee performance and facilitate professional growth.

Essential Functions:
• As a team leader and motivator, maintain a healthy, fair, and inclusive work environment by promoting diversity, and exercising teamwork and collaboration.

• Actively promote a professional workplace culture of mutual respect and collegiality for all members of the institution.

• Work to build positive and cooperative relationships with staff, encouraging them to work toward individual and departmental goals.

• Inspect personnel assigned to his/her shift to ensure assignment compliance, proper appearance, and maintenance of issued equipment.

• Observe the direct actions of University Police Officers by responding to calls for service and daily interaction.

• Assess officers’ job knowledge, judgment, and work performance.

• Determine when emergency response is necessary. Provide direction and assignment as appropriate.

• Notify the campus community of ongoing threats to safety.

• Update and maintain service logs.

• Schedule maintenance of department equipment and vehicles.

• Facilitate sharing of material information with stakeholders. Share pertinent information with other shifts. Relay special orders and instructions at briefings.

• Review all administrative duties as assigned, including but not limited to: reports, personnel requests, arrests, and citations completed by each officer assigned or for other offices as requested to assess and ensure the accuracy and content of the officer’s work.

• Maintain data, organize, prepare and submit reports. Maintain the Daily Crime Log.

• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required or requested to meet the requirements of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy, the Campus Crime Statistic Act, the Higher Education and Opportunity Act, and for other administrative needs.

• Perform routine campus patrols on foot or by vehicle, looking for violations of the law or security protocols and following up accordingly.

• Prepare and deliver presentations to campus and community groups to promote positive relationships with the campus community and surrounding neighborhoods, raise awareness, and facilitate understanding of safety and security issues on campus and through the local area.

• Coordinate and/or support the following programs as assigned:

o Training development
o Evidence oversight
o Bike patrol unit
o Cadet program
o Equipment issuance
o Body-worn camera program

• Perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent, and one year of experience as a full-time certified law enforcement officer.
• Freedom from any conviction of any felony crime or any classification of the crime of domestic violence or any type of current protection from abuse/stalking order against them.
• Current certification as a full-time law enforcement officer from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.
• Valid class C Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record under University standards and the ability to obtain a Kansas Driver’s License within six months of hire.

Physical Requirements:
*Must be at least 21 years of age.
This is a “designated safety sensitive position” and will be required to undergo drug testing.

Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of college coursework in the criminal justice field. Independent leadership experience.
