Essential Functions (Job Duties):
Metro Detroit Teaching Residency for Urban Excellence (TRUE) Project is an accelerated graduate-level certification and residency program for mid-career professionals in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) fields. The Metro Detroit TRUE Project aims to improve student academic achievement, especially in STEM areas, by leveraging the residents' content expertise and integrating research-proven strategies, such as culturally responsive teaching and trauma-informed, socio-emotional learning, to become effective urban school teachers.
Wayne State University College of Education's Teacher Education Division and the Metro Detroit TRUE Project are seeking experienced public PK-12 teachers in STEM fields to work as Residency Coaches with TRUE Project Residents in middle and high schools in Dearborn Public Schools and Detroit Public Schools Community District. This part-time position will be for Fall 2022, Winter 2023, and Spring 2023.
The Residency Coach will:
Act as liaison between the university, program course work, the TRUE Project Residents, and the resident placement sites.
Facilitate collaboration between Residents and Mentor Teachers;
Conduct observations and coaching conversations (pre- and post-) with the Residents, while providing them with ongoing support and guidance;
Assist Residents to develop and apply pedagogical content knowledge and skills in the classroom;
Provide feedback and grading for course-related assignments through the use of digital tools (spreadsheets, Canvas, etc.);
Utilize digital videos of teaching to facilitate a shared inquiry of teaching for learning; AND
Attend orientations, seminars, and meetings, and facilitate meetings with Residents.
Unique Duties:
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in teacher education or related field from an accredited college or university.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, OTHER CREDENTIALS:
TEACHING AND COACHING: General knowledge and understanding of effective instructional coaching for supporting residents in growing their professional practices;
LEARNING TECHNOLOGY: Ability to utilize digital tools for planning, teaching, and coaching;
COMPUTER SKILLS: Proficient in the use of computers, email, and the internet;
COMMUNICATION: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts to diverse groups, verbally, visually and in writing;
INTERPERSONAL: Ability to work in a confidential and diplomatic manner, build rapports, develop and maintain relationships; and
MULTICULTURAL AWARENESS: Awareness of multicultural issues and broad knowledge of diversity across the field of education; willingness and ability to lead, serve, and engage others in a multicultural environment.
Preferred Qualifications :
Experience teaching Secondary Math and/or Science content (grades 6-12);
Experience in instructional coaching in STEM content areas; and
Experience working in urban schools.
