Multimedia Technician

We are seeking an Event Technician. Under the direction of the Multimedia Systems Manager and working under the Technical Coordinator, this position is responsible for providing technical and operational support for the field of multimedia, audiovisual recording, editing and distribution, digital media, and video conferencing for events. Will assure quality service is provided in a fast-paced environment to our customers at The Johns Hopkins University. This position is responsible for the setup, support and operation of all event technology equipment (lighting, computers, LCD projectors, wireless audio, cameras, etc.), maintenance of the equipment and technical assistance. Will record and edit audio and video for lecture capture, conferences, performances and other meetings and events. Will use media scheduling and tracking software, and will provide support for special events and other duties as assigned.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Event AV Support.
  • Primary assistance in Shriver Hall for events and performance in regards to lighting, audio, cameras, streaming, recording and/or stage management.
  • Deliver, set up, and operate A/V equipment for events on the Homewood Campus.
  • Properly check out and check in the A/V equipment using equipment inventory tracking system.
  • Meet with customers prior to the event to provide instructions on how to use the equipment and perform a test run.
  • Multimedia Equipment Support.
  • Maintain, upgrade, repair, and install any upgrades or malfunctioning equipment within Shriver Hall and the event equipment as instructed by the Technical Coordinator or Multimedia Systems Manager.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of technical aspects for sound reinforcement, audio mixing, lighting, film and video, with mastery of at least one mentioned area.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills. Must be able to work closely and collaboratively with staff and colleagues from a broad spectrum of the university’s offices and departments, as well as guest artists, guest speakers and contacts at local arts organizations.
  • Professional demeanor, superior written and verbal communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts: evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree in a technical area of the performing arts, event management or a similar field.
  • 4-5 years of professional experience in technical and logistical supervision and support for a large performance/lecture venue and/or event production with a combination of experience in theater lighting design, live event sound and theater production.
  • Experience working with a wide range of users, including university students, faculty and staff and guest lecturers and performing artists.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand/ sit for extended periods of time, must be able to lift/ move 50 lbs without restriction.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications
  • Experience with multimedia distribution systems, preferably Crestron. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Premiere Pro or BlackMagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve, Zoom Video Conferencing, PC, MAC.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
