Admissions Counselor - Access Focus

Job Description:

The position of the Admission Counselor – Access Focus is a 12-month year round position that exists to thoroughly engage in undergraduate recruitment efforts, through actively communicating the benefits of a Mines education to prospective students, their parents, counselors and other community organizations. The Admissions Counselor is primarily responsible for visiting high schools, advising prospective students and their families on admissions to Mines, and evaluating applications for admission, educating the community on the enrollment process, and other general Admissions Office activities. In addition, the Admissions Counselor will serve as the lead Admissions staff person in identifying, developing and facilitating Mines’ student recruitment efforts focusing on access from communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM majors. The Admissions Counselor will be expected to work collaboratively with the campus community and he or she will routinely be expected to work on weekends and evenings. Extensive travel will be required with many of these activities.

Responsibilities:

Recruitment and outreach:
  • The Admissions Counselor will represent Mines at scheduled college day/night programs throughout Colorado and will schedule individual high school visits to recruit students to Mines. This position will also build relationships with Community Based Organizations that support post-secondary enrollment. On occasion, travel outside the state is necessary.
  • The Admissions Counselor is assigned to manage and independently coordinate the programming outreach with school districts and Community Based Organizations that have a high percentage of underserved students. This position will support pre-collegiate initiatives at Mines, including summer programs and conferences, specifically for underrepresented students developing future application interest. He or she will also be responsible for tracking and evaluating statistical data on the recruitment of underrepresented students specific to Mines.
Freshmen Application Review
  • The Admissions Counselor will serve as a member of the Freshman Admissions Evaluation Team. The Admissions Counselor will work closely with Mines academic and administrative faculty, and other personnel, to facilitate the successful recruitment, admission and enrollment of new students to Mines
On and Off Campus Programming
  • The Admissions Counselor will routinely meet with prospective students and their families as part of the Admissions Office on-campus, individual and small group tour and information sessions . The position counsels students and parents before and after admission through to enrollment.
  • The Admission Counselor will provide support for the fall and spring on-campus visitation programs hosted by Admissions.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid driver’s license, and current, valid personal auto insurance are required.
  • Moderate amounts of demonstrated experience working in a student services office within a high school, pre-collegiate program or college setting with students including those from socially, racially and ethnically diverse populations.
  • Strong public speaking, written and oral communication skills are a must.
  • Applicants must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and be highly detail-oriented.
  • Travel needs of the positions require successful applicants to be experienced both working independently as well as within a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in a college or university admissions office.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Familiarity with integrated student information systems (i.e., Banner or similar system) and CRM’s (i.e. Slate) as well as word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.

Pay Range:
$47,600 - $55,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
