Special Programs Coordinator

Description/Job Summary

Under supervision of the Director of Special Programs or designee, the Special Programs Coordinator commits to supporting students for the Office of Special Programs not limited to the Mayor’s Scholars Program, Granville T. Woods Scholars Program, Near-Completers, and program grants. The coordinator provides leadership in strategies that support program growth and retention, general program coordination, advising, and assistance with registration and the development and implementation of program curriculum.

Responsibilities/Duties
  • Assists the Director of Special Programs to establish workshops and activities that are engaging and results-driven Provides academic advising, facilitates referrals on personal problems, and may register students
  • Identifies, recruits, advises, and helps to retain scholars in accordance with the program’s MOU
  • Evaluates academic status eligibility for scholars
  • Assists with marketing strategies and publications for special program
  • Recruits student participants
  • Orients participants and student mentors to program mission
  • Assists with organizing and leading the Summer Bridge Program
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of the special population grants
  • Tracks scholar’s graduation and transfer enrollment
  • Assists to compile and submit all reports required by regulation in a timely manner Maintains service logs for all scholars in the program
  • Accompanies scholars to college/career visits, as needed
  • Organizes other workshops and seminars in accordance MOU and grant guidelines Assists the Director with coordinating group site visits for scholars
  • Works with Institutional Research to assess program effectiveness
  • Assists the Director with designing new opportunities to meet program goals
  • Coordinates advising services for students (not limited to academic, career, personal and financial aid) Provides early alerts on academic status to students
  • Assists students in navigating the transfer school application and admissions process Makes appropriate referrals regarding tutoring, counseling, and career needs Provides student and program progress
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as education, counseling, or academic field directly related to this role.
  • Minimum of two years experience as an academic advisor, program coordinator, or related academic or enrollment management functions within secondary or higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant field (counseling, psychology, higher education administration, etc.); Strong presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience responding to a variety of internal and external constituencies; experience interpreting policies and making decisions independently; experience using Banner ERP, Ellucian, or similar CRM software.
  • Five years experience in advising, enrollment management or special program coordination. Bilingual (English - Spanish) communication skills.
  • Community college experience
