The Grounds Maintenance Department of Facilities Services invites applications for a Groundskeeper II position to join their team on campus. The position is responsible for general landscape maintenance such as turf, floriculture, and tree maintenance. The position also performs general grounds cleanup. The person in this position will provide limited supervision and training of Groundskeeper I, Temps and students.

Responsibilities
  • Turf maintenance: mowing, line trimming, weeding, aerating, topdressing, fertilizing, sod replacement, edging and thatching
  • Landscaping maintenance: shrub maintenance, pruning, installation, mulching, weeding, digging and trenching, and general cleanup of trash and litter
  • General floriculture maintenance: planting flowers and greenhouse operations
  • Tree maintenance: pruning, planting, and assisting arborist as needed
  • General grounds cleanup: picking up debris, leaf mulching and removal, sweeping, and window well cleanup
  • Apply fertilization, pesticides and herbicides as an operator under a Pesticide Applicator’s license
  • Adjust and program irrigation clocks; install and repair minor irrigation issues
  • Snow removal: plowing, de-icing, and applying sand
  • Operation of various hand tools and power tools
  • Operation of equipment such as: push mowers, weed eaters, rototillers, leaf blowers, chain saws, sod cutters, riding mowers, tractors and attachments, dump truck, utility vehicles, and snow removal equipment
  • Minor equipment maintenance
  • Ability to operate vehicle with lift as needed
  • Operate handheld tablets and radios
  • Basic knowledge of computers
  • Any additional duties assigned by Grounds Manager
Supervision Responsibilities include:
  • Assign tasks to complete project
  • Conduct general training: safety, equipment operation, and general equipment procedures
  • Perform routine quality checks to inspect the work completed by others
  • Perform evaluations of student workers
Required Skills
  • Acts professionally at all times, able to exercise sound judgment, and maintain a safe work environment
  • Provides quality customer service to the building staff, faculty, students, and the general public
  • Establishes positive communication with co-workers, staff, faculty, students, and the general public
  • Participates in regular meetings and safety trainings
  • Ensures proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Reports building irregularities to Grounds Manager
  • Understands key protocols and building security
  • Ability to keep work space organized
  • Ability to work long hours and occasional weekends
  • Knowledge, skill and ability required to perform duties and responsibilities of lower-level grounds positions
  • Create and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect within a diverse team environment
  • Read and follow instructions, safety information, policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated skill in customer service orientation; interpersonal, listening and oral communication; and in organization and time-management
  • Knowledge of general labor procedures, tools and equipment
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting: Ground to 60 inches, up to 50 pounds. Ground to 30 inches, 80 pounds.
  • Carrying: Front carry up to 50 pounds for 10 feet or less.
  • Right and left hand carry up to 75 pounds for wheelbarrow handling.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (pushing and pulling materials, and during the use of tools): 100 pounds sustained.
  • Repetitive squatting on both even and uneven surfaces.
  • 3-minute overhead work from various positions (standing, crouching, or kneeling).
  • Static forward bending from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Trunk rotation from a standing or kneeling position.
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
  • Walking various distances, continuously, throughout the day on even and uneven surfaces.
  • Use of various grip circumferences and strengths as well as static grip positions during the use of various tools (4 1/2" to 5 1/2" circumference needing an average of 50 pounds of grip force) and while manipulating various work materials (maximum 100 pounds).
  • Use of foot controls and hand controls to drive and operate light and heavy machinery.
Minimum Required Experience
  • High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of progressively responsible grounds experience or a combination of experience and education
  • Possess a current driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in forklift operations

Monday through Friday 6:30am to 3:00pm

(Summer hours 6:00am – 2:30pm), 12 months/year

Salary: $16.505/hr

Union Affiliation: FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
