Northeastern University invites applications for a Research Professor and Institute Member position in the field of Interdisciplinary Engineering with a demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset located at The Roux Institute at Northeastern University, in Portland, Maine. The faculty title is open rank.

The Research Professor in Engineering (open rank) at the Roux Institute at Northeastern University will be responsible for building an independent and externally funded research program, as well as providing leadership for overseeing the growth of the research program. The research is positioned in the fields of interdisciplinary Engineering and Data Science. Besides the faculty title of “Research Professor (open rank)”, the successful candidate will be named as an “Institute Member” at the Roux Institute.

Besides driving their own research program as a Northeastern University faculty member, the Research Professor will contribute to a portfolio of highly matrixed collaborations with contributors on the Institute campus in Portland ME and beyond. Collaborators will include faculty and professional research staff at The Roux Institute, faculty across the Northeastern network, and industry researchers who may be co-located at the Institute or located at their own company. The Northeastern University research network available includes the collection of highly innovative university institutes, including the Institute for Experiential Artificial Intelligence, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, and the Institute for Chemical Imaging of Living Systems (www.northeastern.edu/institutes).

Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing a research program that leverages mechanics and physics-based models and data science in engineering in systems of fluids, solids, motions, thermodynamics, biophysics, and electrostatics
  • Developing integrated engineering and data-driven methods in broad areas of engineering including, but not limited to, Engineering Design, Energy, Computer Engineering, Power Electronics, Bioengineering, Ergonomic, Human factors, Engineering of health systems, Manufacturing & Industry 4.0, Additive Manufacturing, Robotics, Autonomy, Internet of Things, and Cybersecurity
  • Use-inspired research with an entrepreneurial mindset to develop science and solutions that matter to society and impact the Maine economy
  • Ability to work effectively within entrepreneurial and interdisciplinary teams of researchers
  • The successful candidate will be appointed as a faculty member in one or more of Northeastern's Colleges and Departments, with their primary locus of at the Roux Institute as part of the Engineering Research vertical. They will report to their disciplinary department chair in their role as a faculty member, but they will also have a matrixed relationship to the Director of Engineering at the Roux Institute in Portland, who is responsible for the construction and execution of the engineering research theme in Portland.


Qualifications
  • PhD or other terminal degree in engineering or a related field, with experience level appropriate for appointment at the rank of Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, or Research Professor.
  • Demonstrated track record of scholarly achievement in relevant areas of engineering, with a commensurate research funding history.
  • Entrepreneurial, energetic, interdisciplinary, and collaborative leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences and settings.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and innovative setting. He/she must have experience working independently and as a member of a team. Some travel may be required to regional campus(es), particularly Boston.
