Job Description
The Director of Parent and Alumni Relations will serve as the chief engagement officer in Student Affairs. This position will be primarily responsible for providing leadership, stewardship and guidance for the division’s engagement efforts with parents, alumni, donors and friends to ultimately increase constituent engagement and philanthropic support for the division. Additionally, the director will collaboratively further Virginia Tech’s overall engagement and institutional advancement goals and objectives.
The director will be responsible for planning, promoting, executing, and evaluating targeted parent and alumni engagement programs, projects, and events for the division. The Director will provide leadership and stewardship to the Tier 1 boards in Student Affairs. In collaboration with the division’s Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing, the director will strategize and implement targeted communication efforts for parents and student leader alumni. This position will work collaboratively with the members of the division’s advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement.
This position jointly reports to the Chief Advancement Officer for Advancement in Student Affairs and the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations in university advancement.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in marketing, hospitality, communication, or related field and relevant experience or Master’s degree
• Experience in event planning, alumni activities and/or educational programming
• Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies
• Must be willing to work evenings/weekends and travel extensively as needed
• Demonstrated ability to work closely and effectively with university alumni, administrators, and faculty
• Must be comfortable making group presentations.
• Proficiency with MS Office suite including apps like OneNote and Teams, Zoom
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in alumni relations
• Significant experience developing effective strategies for planning events to enhance constituent participation and philanthropic support
• Demonstrated ability to train and motivate volunteers
• Experience in higher education, independent school, or nonprofit environments
