Job Description Summary

The Scene Shop Supervisor will oversee the general operations and safe use of the Chapman Studios West ( CSW ) Scene Shop. With the ability to function in a fast-paced environment and handle firm deadlines, this position will take an active role in creating and implementing the policies and procedures for this space to maximize use for 8-15 student productions per week while maintaining a safe and tidy environment that complies with university safety standards and legal requirements. The successful candidate will develop training procedures for the safe and effective use of shop tools and general shop policies. In conjunction with other Dodge staff, manage a shop work schedule that balances efficient use of the space while not overloading what the facility can accommodate during periods of extremely high production volume.
The Scene Shop Supervisor will coordinate with the CSW Scenery Technician and other Dodge staff and faculty in scheduling productions in the shop and will be responsible for ensuring efficient use of resources. Coordinate with the departments of Fire & Life Safety and Risk Management to ensure that the scene shop complies with all University policy. Other responsibilities include back-up support for the CSW Scenery Technician as needed and other duties assigned by the Production Support Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee general operations of the CSW Scene Shop, which includes but is not limited to:
    • Enforcement of University safety policies.
    • Perform yearly self-inspection in addition to periodic (at least quarterly) inspections of the CSW facilities to verify compliance with university policy.
    • Monitor the proper storage, usage and disposal of chemicals and materials such as paints and stains. Retain a database of Safety Data Sheets for all materials in the Shop. Coordinate with EH&S on the disposal of universal waste.
    • Ensure that the shop facilities and paint cage are kept clean and present a professional appearance.
    • Supervise work being performed in the shop to ensure that proper procedures are being followed. Assist students as time permits.
  • Oversee the efficient scheduling and usage of production design facilities
    • In conjunction with the Production Management Team, Scenery Technician and Stage Managers, coordinate access to the scene shop. Build and update the shop work schedule; communicate shop needs to all parties and prevent overloading the space.
    • Meet with student productions to review and guide build plans. Confirm crew needs and aid in developing an attainable schedule.
    • Constantly review the overall construction schedule and adjust to changes accordingly.
    • Maintain a scheduling system for students requesting access to Shop.
  • Run safety and training workshops to support enforcement of Scene Shop safety practices
    • Work with Risk Management to create, implement, revise and distribute scene shop training related documentation, forms and website content as needed.
    • Conduct Scene Shop Workshops to train/certify students on safe use of shop tools and facilities. Maintain Scene Shop Certified Crew List.
    • In coordination with the department of Risk Management, ensure that students are trained in the proper selection and use of PPE, and that it is being worn by all people as needed in the Production Design facilities.
  • Hire, train and supervise Scene Shop student employees
    • Manage the hiring, onboarding, and training of student employees working in the Scene Shop to assist with maintenance, cleaning, and construction.
    • Coordinate student availability and create varied weekly work schedules based on production needs.
    • Ensure student employees are entirely familiar with general policies and procedures, including safety policies.
  • Design and/or construct scenic elements for Dodge College in-house events
    • In collaboration with other Dodge staff and outside clients, aid in the execution of a design plan for various in-house events.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in theatrical, film/TV art department and/or set construction.
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in a scene shop.
  • Working knowledge of industry standard scene shop practices and terminology.
  • Working knowledge of typical prop/sets facility procedures and rentals.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical and build drawings.
  • Experience with CNC routers.
  • Strong organization and time management skills with ability to multi-task, follow up, prioritize whether working independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals at all organizational levels including faculty, students, staff and other members of Chapman community.
  • Strong computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, Internet and email software, Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Technical skills to learn and use enterprise software systems.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify problems and anticipate the impact to sound stages and scene shop, providing solutions as needed.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy and to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Previous experience in the supervision and training of staff.
  • OSHA -10 training.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Chapman policies and procedures
  • OSHA -30 and/or FSO training a plus
