Job Summary:
The Sr. Systems Administrator is a professional team member of Furman University's Information Technology Services Division, reporting to the Director of Systems and Networks. The Sr. Systems Administrator provides skilled management of Microsoft Windows systems and servers, enterprise storage, hypervisors, Active Directory, and other server hardware and software management or virtualization technologies. The Sr. Systems Administrator works extensively with the Director of Systems and Networks to plan, define, design, deploy and maintain all physical and virtual server technologies and storage systems and processes for all Datacenter locations. Performs routine or daily maintenance tasks for these systems as appropriate.
Job Description:
Responsibilities:
Server Management
- Works with Supervisor to evaluate, design, deploy, manage, and
maintain server platforms for all Datacenters
- Plans builds and configures physical and virtual
machines
- Works with team members to support or perform maintenance and
patches for all servers
- Coordinates with supervisor and team to deploy, configure,
monitor, and maintain system security, data integrity, performance
and reliability for all relevant servers and systems.
- Manages automation scripts or methods for performing relevant
batch processes or scheduled tasks.
- Configure access roles, share/permissions and resource security
using standard best practices.
- Manages Active Directory Domains and operational
integrity
- Manages and maintains server hardware and resource farms for
server hardware systems including rack mounts, blades,
hyperconverged systems, composable systems or other platforms as
may be in use or appropriate.
- Manages local or cloud servers as necessary
Storage Management
- Works with Supervisor to evaluate, design, deploy, manage, and
maintain primary storage platforms for all Datacenters
- Monitor storage consumption and growth and capacity
planning.
- Maintains primary storage replication, snapshot and near-term
first-tier recovery processes for business continuity, ransomware
protection and data recovery processes.
- Maintains OS and firmware upgrades, and HA/Cluster performance
and maintenance on storage appliances
- Maintains file shares, permissions and file migration and
permission migration processes.
Hypervisor/virtualization management - Builds and manages host machines
- Designs and manage host templates
- Monitors and manages performance of host machines
- Monitors and manages virtual machine resources
- Applies OS and firmware upgrades to host machines
- Administers and maintains security and approved role-based
access and permissions for server environment
- Consults, assists and supports other Information Technology
Services teams or team members, as appropriate.
- Maintains current, relevant skill-sets in job-related
technologies and best practices.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Completes performance review process with supervisor to
understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the
department and university goals.
- Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for
services and technology.
Relationships:
Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor, and student workers to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.
Frequent contact with members of other departments and students to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.
Responsibility for Final Decisions:
Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps. Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.
Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.
Reports to: Director of Systems and Networks
- Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine
issues or questions are referred to the supervisor
Education
Bachelor's degree preferred with 3 - 5 years' experience in related field.
Skills
Preferred Expertise:
- Managing Microsoft Windows servers and modern Windows
networking.
- Robust experience with Microsoft Active Directory, AWS, and
Azure Cloud services including Active Directory a plus
- Robust experience managing enterprise virtualization- VMware
environment.
- Experience with enterprise storage devices and protocols
including CIFS/SMB, NFS, iSCSI, block protocols. Working knowledge
of newer file protocols a plus.
- Basic TCP/IP networking concepts.
- Basic knowledge of UNIX operating systems a plus
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration
skills.
- Ability to perform well both independently and as a member of a
team
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
