The University of Indianapolis invites applications for an Assistant Professor Tenure Track position in K-6 Literacy Education. This position begins in the 2023-2024 school year. Candidates of diverse and minority backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply for this position.

The School of Education is known for its strong reputation for producing great teachers and partnering with nearby innovative schools and districts. The recent launch of a cutting-edge interdisciplinary Elementary Education STEM program garners national attention for its innovative approach to preparing transformational teachers and teacher leaders.

The successful applicant will have strong knowledge and understanding of foundational reading research and instructional practices, be willing to teach integrated literacy, supervise undergraduate students in field experiences (clinical course-related and possible student teaching), and mentor undergraduate students through their program’s progression. The successful applicant must be willing to teach courses on campus, in clinical settings, and in online environments and to teach occasional evenings as needed.

This position is highly collaborative. Thus, the successful applicant will engage with faculty, students, and school and community partners in a manner that highlights creativity, collegiality, and innovation. An active scholarly research agenda, including publications and presentations, will be encouraged.

Preference will be given to individuals who have the following characteristics:
  • Reading specialist or Language Arts/Reading teacher
  • Experience teaching in a linguistically and culturally diverse K-6 school
  • Knowledge about Makerspace pedagogy and learning technologies
  • Experience infusing literacy into elementary education STEM programs
  • Understanding of working with children with reading difficulties or disabilities
  • Experience teaching in hybrid and online environments and at the university level
  • Experience with teaching, research, and service at the university level
Responsibilities
  • Teaches integrated literacy
  • Supervises undergraduate students in field experiences (clinical course-related and possible student teaching)
  • Mentors undergraduate students through their program's progression
Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Education (or ABD) required; preferred Literacy with a strong emphasis in Elementary Literacy, particularly with linguistically and culturally diverse students
  • Expertise in literacy learning and instruction, including a variety of theoretical perspectives and instructional practices
  • Experience working in K-6 schools, preferably in urban settings, for three or more years
  • Knowledge in integrating technology, transdisciplinary teaching, and problem-based learning
  • Evidence of excellent communication and collaboration skills particularly working with groups such as faculty, university students, K-12 partners, K-6 students, and community partners
