Assistant Professor or Instructor of Nursing, ASN and BSN programs

GENERAL SUMMARY:

  • Delivers face-to-face classroom instruction, online learning strategies, and faculty clinical oversight to promote the ASN and BSN students’ knowledge, skill acquisition and role development. Actively participates in teaching-learning that reflects current best practices and nationally established patient health and safety goals to prepare the nursing student to actively participate in an ever-changing healthcare delivery system, to care for individuals, families, and communities, and to function in entry-level leadership positions. Contributes to curriculum development and fosters the mission of Mercyhurst University and the philosophy and goals of the ASN and BSN Programs.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

  • Abide by the Faculty Duties and Responsibilities listed in the Mercyhurst University Faculty Handbook.    In concert with the Director and program faculty, prepares course syllabi and curriculum content in assigned subject area. Subject area to include nursing fundamentals; maternal/newborn nursing; pediatrics; psychiatric/mental health nursing; medical surgical nursing; critical care nursing; community/public health; population-focused health care; global health; cultural competence; research and evidence based nursing practice; nursing informatics; health promotion; chronicity; vulnerable populations; and leadership/management. Conducts appropriate research to ensure that course content incorporates best practice, current trends, and developments in nursing practice. Demonstrates expertise in online and traditional classroom presentations of theory and clinical laboratory activities. Guides, structures, and evaluates student performance in theory and faculty-supervised, precepted clinical experiences. Maintains clinical expertise by attending at least one workshop related to area of expertise each year. Maintains currency in CPR.
  • Communicates frequently with students and their academic counselors and/or program director, as needed, to review the student’s progress, and to assure that the outcomes of the ASN and BSN programs are being met. Submits attendance, via Self-Service, after each class and communicates concerns to director as needed. Develops strategies that increase the retention of qualified students within the program. Maintains files and records on student classroom and preceptorship performance. Submits grades to the Director and, according to policy, to the registrar in a timely manner. Maintains positive communication with various departments within the University, affiliating agencies, and community by participating in committees and through volunteer work. Communicates frequently with teaching team and/or program director to discuss the course progression and plan and to coordinate preceptorship activities and discuss student progression. Participates in accreditation activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATION:

    • Pennsylvania RN licensure. Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) required. Doctoral degree or current enrollment in a doctoral program of study with a 3-year completion plan preferred. Graduate preparation and experience in specialty area required. Minimum of three years teaching experience in a nursing program preferred. Demonstration of progressively responsible nursing experience necessary to gain full knowledge of nursing theories, techniques, and applications, to be able to apply teaching theories and approaches to classroom and clinical laboratory settings. Knowledgeable in Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Blackboard preferred. Interpersonal skills necessary for an effective learning environment for students and associates within the program, university, affiliating agencies and the community. Certification in CPR and evidence of meeting the health guidelines required by affiliating agencies.
    • Certification as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) preferred.
