Position Summary

The University of Georgia Department of Theatre and Film Studies seeks a Technical Director, at the rank of Academic Professional Associate or Academic Professional, to begin August 2023.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the scenic, electrics and prop shops.
• Implement and support safety protocols and best practices.
• Supervise shop staff, undergraduate and graduate student workers.
• Maintain budgets for shows, shop supplies, and labor.
• Teach one course per semester in technical theatre at either the undergraduate, graduate, or split level (including Vectorworks 2D and 3D and Stagecraft).
• Participate in department and production committees as required.
• Create production calendar and scheduling, coordinating with faculty stage manager and staff facility manager
• Purchase materials, schedule workers, maintain the scene shop and its equipment.
• Supervise occasional weekend work calls including hang/focus, load-in, and strike.
• Mentor MFA design students through realized design projects.

About the College/Unit/Department

The Department of Theatre and Film Studies is a unit of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. It offers B.A. degrees in theatre and in film studies, MFA degrees in performance, design/technology and dramatic media, and the Ph.D. in theatre and performance studies. The department encompasses the applied and scholarly study of drama in a wide range of media, including stage, film and 3D computer animation.

The Department produces 6 shows within the academic year, with tiered support. This includes 4 Mainstage shows with full shop support and 2 Studio/Student shows with limited support. Housed within the Fine Arts Building are our 2 stages: the Fine Arts Stage (680 seating capacity) and the Cellar Theatre (99 seating capacity). On rare occasions productions have taken place off-site in local rented theatres or in outdoor amphitheaters and gardens on campus.

Applicants should have an MFA or equivalent terminal degree in Technical Direction or a related field.

Additional Requirements

Candidates without a terminal degree must document exceptional accomplishments in their respective field and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.

The Academic Professional position is the second of three progressive ranks in this faculty track. Under normal circumstances, candidates for appointment or promotion to this rank must have had five (5) years of experience at the Academic Professional Associate level (or equivalent) either at UGA or another institution. Candidates for appointment or promotion to this rank must show evidence of a high level of achievement and impact as appropriate for the position’s duties, as well as recognition of professional excellence by peers outside the hiring unit. Individuals at this rank must present evidence of emerging stature as regional or national authorities within the scope of their assigned duties. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff and guest artists, and a commitment to enhancing equity, diversity and inclusion in technical theatre. Competitive applicants will have Expertise in 2D and 3D CAD, rigging, and welding ( MIG and TIG ). Ability to use CNC router preferred.
