Position Summary

The Archivist and Instructional Services Librarian is a tenure-track, full-time academic faculty librarian reporting to the Director of Libraries. This position leads and manages the College’s Archives and provides general and subject specialized library information literacy instruction, reference services, and collection development for assigned departments.

Major Responsibilities

Archivist
  • Responsible for the management and administration of the College Archives, a repository of historical materials (physical and digital) relating to the founding, development, and ongoing work of SUNY Cortland.
  • Organize and process collections to include digitization of materials, creation of finding aids, acquisition of new collections and recommendation of preservation strategies.
  • Promote awareness of College Archives through outreach and instructional activities; assist campus, external community and researchers in using the collection.
  • Manage the ongoing development of the library’s digital repository, Digital Commons.

Instruction and Reference Services
  • Provides reference services at a desk, via technology, and by appointment. May work evenings and weekends as appropriate.
  • Serves as a liaison to selected departments; provides general and specialized instruction to faculty and students in the department.
  • Participates in the library’s information literacy program by teaching sessions, creating tutorials and supplemental instructional materials.
  • Selects and evaluates materials to be added to the library’s collections in collaboration with faculty and other library staff; participates in library-wide collection development programs.
In accordance with the SUNY Board of Trustees and SUNY Cortland’s College Handbook, academic librarians will prepare and submit a portfolio for peer review as stated in the Library Personnel Committee Policies and Procedures; the criteria reviewed are: Mastery of Subject; Bibliographic Skills; Teaching; Service, Professional Growth; Administrative Ability; and Scholarly Ability.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

Reports to the Director of Libraries.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s of Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated successful working experience in archives and special collections, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Experience with teaching information literacy instruction programs and providing reference services.
  • Familiarity with professional standards, best practices, and emerging technologies in both libraries and archives.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with digital repositories such as Dspace, Digital Commons, ArchivesSpace, or and ContentDM.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues involved in the use and preservation of digital collections, both reformatted and born-digital.
  • Knowledge of best practices in information literacy instruction.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work successfully both as an active, collaborative team member and independently.
