The Department of Health Services, Policy & Practice of the Brown University School of Public Health invite applications for a faculty position in the areas of decision science and health technology assessment at the Assistant, Associate, or full Professor level in the University’s research track.

Applicants’ contributions may involve applied, empirical-methodological (e.g., meta-epidemiological), or fundamental-methodological research (e.g., development and validation of novel quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods).

The above-mentioned areas of interest are meant broadly. For example, “decision science” includes simulation and mathematical modeling, mathematical optimization, uncertainty propagation, sensitivity analysis, preference modeling and elicitation, psychology of decision making, health equity research, economic (e.g., cost effectiveness/benefit, budget impact, or value of information) analysis and related objects of study. All health contexts are of interest, but special consideration is given to (broadly meant) health technology assessment (i.e., assessing the costs and efficacy, effectiveness, or utility of medications, interventions, or policies in medicine and public health).

Applicants’ contributions should include applied, and optionally, methodological research in health decision science. The successful applicant is expected to serve as mentor and trainer for graduate students, trainees, clinical research methodologists, and biostatisticians in the context of research collaborations. The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community within the School of Public Health and the University.

The successful applicant will conduct health-related research; acquire funding to support the conduct of high-quality research; publish peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and/or books; teach graduate level courses; advise students and serve on their committees, and participate in Center, Department, School, or University committees.

Qualifications

  • PhD in decision science, mathematics, operations research and management science, biostatistics, computer science, physics, epidemiology, economics, or other quantitative disciplines; or MD or equivalent Highly promising potential (for Assistant Professors) and documented record (for Associate and Full Professors) of applied and methodological contributions in the areas of interest. Highly promising potential (for Assistant Professors) and documented record (for Associate and Full Professors) for securing competitive funding.

Academic rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the applicant. Interested candidates should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae and a brief research statement outlining their interests via Interfolio at the following link: http://apply.interfolio.com/117177.

The letter of application should indicate the rank of the position (Assistant, Associate, Full).

Candidates who wish to be considered for Assistant Professor should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted through Interfolio. Applicants for the Assistant Professor Rank should exhibit a potential to become top caliber researchers. They should demonstrate autonomy in developing their own research agenda and the potential to obtain competitive funding.

Candidates who wish to be considered for Associate or Full Professor should submit a list of five prospective referees. Applicants for the Associate (Full) Professor level must also have a national (international) reputation in health services research, an independently funded program of research, and a proven track record of leadership in research, teaching, and professional service.

Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2022.  Applications received after the priority deadline (on December 15, 2022) may be reviewed until the position is filled or the search is closed.

The position will likely be affiliated with the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health, which is led by TA Trikalinos. The object of study of this center includes methods and applications of evidence synthesis and health decision analysis, broadly meant.
