Position Summary

New Mexico Highlands University ( NMHU ) is seeking a candidate for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Exercise Science who is committed to making a difference in the lives of college students at an historic New Mexico University.

This position will be assigned to the main campus in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach lower and upper level courses and laboratories, advise students, develop curriculum, and direct practicum experiences. Courses could include biomechanics, exercise physiology, stress testing, body composition, kinesiology, laboratories and other departmental courses based on applicant’s educational and teaching background.

The incumbent is further expected to pursue scholarly activities and serve at the University, local, state, regional, and national levels.

Summer teaching is optional, based on personal interests and departmental needs. The incumbent in this position will have responsibilities in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service.

Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty contractual duties include, but are not limited to:
a) Teach exercise science courses and laboratories for the undergraduate and graduate tracks, with possible teaching assignments in other related areas
b) Hold office hours
c) Advise students in academic degree pursuits and career development plans
d) Direct graduate students with graduate thesis/field projects, and comprehensive exams
e) Provide professional service to Department, College, University
f) Conduct and publish research/scholarly activities
g) The normal fulltime teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester
h) The candidate should be prepared to develop and teach courses online using Brightspace
i) Tenure and promotion decisions follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement and require positive reviews based on performance in teaching, service, and scholarship to the Department, College, University, and external community

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Applicants must have a terminal degree (doctorate in exercise science or a closely-related area). ABD will be considered. Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, supervise graduate research, interest and commitment to work with diverse populations.

Experience: Successful teaching at the university level. Experience addressing and implementing matters related to diversity in an educational environment or community.

Preferred Qualifications

a) Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate coursework in exercise science
b) Experience conducting laboratories in exercise science
c) Scholarly work and/or grant-writing in exercise science or related field
d) Experience providing outreach to first generation college students and experience teaching with teaching technology, preferably Brightspace
e) Experience in writing/building curriculum in exercise science
f) Ability to acquire external grant funding
g) Membership and involvement in one or more professional organizations related to exercise science

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of course content; ability to organize course material and deliver course content that takes into account student needs; can provide corrective feedback; has sufficient time to prepare for class and grade assignments; and ability using teaching technology, preferably Brightspace
