Job Summary:

The Waste Technician employee will operate the trash truck in a responsible and safe manner at all times. The primary responsibility is collecting refuse throughout the campus. As part of the Facility Management team, the driver will coordinate refuse needs between all Facility departments. The Project Custodian will operate as part of a team whose primary responsibility will be to perform custodial services for academic, administration, and residential buildings.

Essential Job Functions

  • Waste Technician
    • Remove all refuse across campus from collection areas on a daily schedule
    • Clear chutes from residential halls as needed
    • Empty trash dumpsters from designated areas on a daily schedule (This includes weekly washing and sanitizing of all dumpsters.)
    • Remove all recycle materials campus wide with separate vehicle and disposing of in designated recycle dumpsters for pick up by Waste Management
    • Coordinate yard waste pick up with grounds department leads on a daily basis
    • Wash, clean, and deodorize trash truck on a daily basis
    • Grease all fittings on trash truck on a weekly basis and logging service
    • Check oil, water, and tire pressure on a weekly basis
    • Coordinate with auto shop for regular scheduled maintenance
    • Make off campus trips to Orange County Landfill and Convanta Lake Inc along with diesel filling station in a safe and timely manner on an as needed basis (reconcile all purchases)
    • Preform pre- and post- trip inspections of assigned vehicles and documents any safety concerns
    • Operate vehicle in accordance with the Department of Transportation requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws

  • Project Custodian
    • Dust, mop, sweep, vacuum, stripe, and wax floors, operating equipment such as scrubbers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and carpet cleaner
    • Empty waste containers, separating recyclable items
    • Maintain restrooms in sanitary condition
    • Clean chalkboards and chairs in classrooms
    • Assist in relocating furniture, books, and equipment
    • Replace light bulbs and performing various minor building maintenance tasks
    • Set-up special events; i.e., setting-up and cleaning tables, trash containers, setting-up, rearranging furniture, etc.

Minimum
Qualifications & Education:



  • Hold a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with an air brake endorsement.
  • Possess a valid driver's license, or ability to obtain an Florida driver's license within 30 days of accepting the job, and acceptable MVR are required. Comfort with driving and maintaining a 15-passenger bus required.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow basic instructions in English.
  • Ability to read and understand label instructions on chemicals.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and working with hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures used in grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of small tools and equipment used and ability to make small repairs.
  • Demonstrates cross-cultural awareness and communication skills to maximize effective collaboration across diverse groups on-campus.
  • Physical role requiring heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, bending twisting, and kneeling.
  • Prolonged standing and walking to various areas around campus to access work areas.
  • Ability to handle, lift and/or carry heavy objects and equipment.
  • Ability to complete written paperwork regarding projects completed

Work Schedule:

The Waste Technician/Project Custodian is scheduled to work 7.5 hours/day, 37.5 hours per week. The schedule for this role is:
  • Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:00pm (with a 1 hour paid lunch)

As a condition of employment in this position, the incumbent will be subject to call in outside of regular hours in order to respond to emergencies, including the preparation and maintenance of College facilities, grounds, systems and services during inclement weather crises.

*Works overtime, special events and weekends may be required as needed.

Work Environment:
  • Works on-campus at multiple work sites including indoors and outdoors.
  • Work requires physical exertion and exposure to both hot and cold weather.
  • Physical ability to handle, lift and/or carry heavy objects and equipment.
  • Must be punctual and reliable; daily attendance is required.
