Job
Summary:

The Director of Residential Education and Explorations will lead a team of 145 staff in providing a set of congruent, comprehensive, contemporary, and dynamic residential education, orientation, and first-year experience programs that successfully integrate students into the college and enrich students' intellectual and social lives while providing a living-learning environment that enables students to achieve, excel and grow within a supportive community. The vision is the creation of a program in which holistic growth, learning/development, and engagement are core. Encompassing a residential education program with 1600 beds, new student orientation, and important pieces of the College's first-year experience program, the department supports and furthers the Rollins mission to “educate students for global citizenship and responsible leadership” as they go into the world prepared to “pursue meaningful lives and productive careers.”

With an understanding of and commitment to liberal arts education, the Director will develop and implement programs, services/resources, and engagement opportunities that foster a sense of community, provide a connection to campus life, promote leadership and opportunities for personal growth and development, enhance academic achievement, foster individual responsibility and accountability, promote diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and multicultural competence, and recognize individual interests, values, and abilities. The Director will collaborate with faculty and staff to integrate learning into the residential experience and our orientation and first-year experience programs. Reporting to the AVP for Student Affairs & Dean of Students, the Director will provide visionary, innovative, and strategic leadership to the department.

Key Job Functions/Competencies:

• Strategic Leadership
  
  • Provides leadership in the development of a strategic plan for the department with goals, objectives, and outcomes aimed at creating a cohesive program that is aligned with the College's mission and Student Affairs Division. Provide vision, leadership/direction in the creation and implementation of a holistic and developmental residential curriculum that engages students. Forges partnerships with faculty and staff in the development of living-learning communities, and first-year experience and orientation programs.
• Staff Leadership & Development
  
  • Responsible for selection, training, professional development, supervision, and evaluation of approximately 145 staff members, which includes 5 professional staff, 6 graduate students, and 135 paraprofessional peer educators and student employees.
• Community & Programming Development
  
  • Responsible for residential curriculum and programming model focused on holistic growth and development that is delivered to 1600+ students in 21 residence halls. Works collaboratively with staff in Fraternity and Sorority Life life to provide direction and supervision to halls housing FSL organizations.
  • Focus on building community and developmental/educational programming by enhancing current efforts and coordinating new initiatives, including first-year programs, the faculty-in-residence program, and living-learning communities. Initiate work with colleagues to enhance programming.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners to create and implement new student orientation programs.
• Crisis Response
  
  • Coordinates the College's 24/7 duty/crisis on-call rotation and structure and provides 24 hour “on-call” emergency duty support for the college. Serves as emergency liaison between the department, Campus Safety, and the Dean of Students. Provides support and counsel in situations involving student behaviors of concern as appropriate.
• Administration
  
  • Provides fiscal management for department budget of $650,000.
  • Evaluates and assess the College's housing and residential education operations. Ensures an effective key management and security system.
  • Manages the housing software (The Housing Director by Adirondack) to track room assignments, student information, billing, and departmental reports.
  • Works collaboratively campus partners to coordinate strategic communication and new student onboarding.
  • Works collaboratively with the Dean of Faculty and Registrar offices to create new student course schedules.
  • Develops assessment tools to measure effectiveness of programs.
• Communications
  
  • Communicates with residents and parents regarding department policies and questions and identifies appropriate solutions when issues or concerns emerge. In consultation with the Marketing and Communications team, develops webpage and other materials for residents.
• Policies & Procedures
  
  • Develops effective policies, protocols, processes, and structures to ensure the health, safety, security, and welfare of students. Ensures compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, standards, and laws. Reviews and makes determinations on student requests for exemption from the residency requirement.
• Collaboration
  
  • Serves as a liaison between the department and campus partners.
  • Collaborates closely with the Facilities Management to identify and respond to immediate maintenance needs, as well as to provide input to plans for deferred maintenance and capital requests.
  • Provides key leadership, expertise, and input to the College's Master Planning process in developing a short-and long-range plan to update, transform and renovate residential spaces on campus that align with best practices, student needs and student success.
  • Ensures meaningful and intentional collaboration with the Faculty in Residence and RCC Faculty to create a robust and engaging Living Learning Community Program.
  • Serves on college committees and task forces.

Minimum
Qualifications & Education:

• Live-In Residential Life experience.
• Master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5-7 years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in residence life.
• Supervisory and interpersonal skills with experience supervising professional staff.
• Experience with, or an understanding of, a small, residential liberal arts institution.
• Successful record of administration including strategic planning, program development, assessment, and budget management; demonstrated understanding of student development and student leadership theory.
• Experience creating learning outcomes and developing/working with residential curriculums
• Knowledge of best practices related to residential education, orientation, and first-year and student transition programs.
• Experience with policy development and implementation.
• Strong understanding of effective crisis response and management and transferable crisis response experience; ability to remain poised and calm during emergency situations.
• Ability to develop and sustain residential campus communities that value and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
• Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Ability to make sound judgments and difficult decisions.
• Skilled in staff recruitment, selection, training, and team building.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Possess a valid driver's license, or ability to obtain an Florida driver's license within 30 days of accepting the job, and acceptable MVR are required.

Preferred
Qualifications:

• Experience with orientation and transition programs.
• Experience with the Adirondack Housing Director Software.

Work Environment:

• Campus-based, front-facing customer service position, working in an office environment.
• Work requires visual strain and use of computer.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as appropriate.
• Must be able to traverse stairs and travel between multiple buildings as part of duties.
