Position Summary:

Individual colleges within the Community College system provide child development centers, offering child care, child development, nutrition and related services for the preschool children of students, staff and citizens of communities in their respective service areas. The colleges also offer academic programs in early childhood education. The child development centers provide the collateral function of serving as laboratories for practical experience by early childhood education students.

The Child Development Assistant Teacher assists and participates in teaching, protecting and providing care for pre-school children in a Community College child development center.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or an appropriately related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Successful Candidate must have or must possess:
  • Early childhood education
  • Child development and learning principles and applications
  • Child protection and care
  • Information technology literacy skills
  • Effective oral and written communication.
Special Requirements:
  • Hold a valid First Aid, CPR, and Medication Administration Certificates approved by the OEC Division of Licensing; Health & Safety Training, Mandated Reporter Training
  • Incumbents must be fingerprinted through the Office of Early Childhood and approved to work in a childcare setting

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three (3) or more years classroom teaching experience in an early care and education (preschool) group setting preferably in a NAEYC accredited program
  • Student teaching experience or working in a college lab school setting with Montessori materials and curriculum
  • Experience working with student teachers, and volunteers
  • Experience working with young children with challenging behaviors and special needs
  • Head Teacher Certificate for preschool age children or Level A Early Childhood Teacher Credential (ECTC)
  • Knowledge and experience including but not limited to: cycle of intentional teaching, writing learning experience plans using CT ELDS and CT DOTS Assessment tool, newsletters, portfolios, conducting parent conferences and knowledge of developmentally and appropriate teaching strategies
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish or English and Chinese
Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of Child Development Center or other administrator, the Child Development Assistant Teacher is accountable for contributing to the development, protection and care of children enrolled in the College’s Child Development Center through effective performance in these essential functional areas:
  • Teaching, protecting and caring for children
    • accountable for contributing to the learning and safety of assigned children in the College’s Child Development Center
  • Parent communication
    • accountable for providing useful information to parents on their children’s progress
  • Center operation
    • accountable for contributing to the operation of the Child Development Center
In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Starting Salary:

Anticipated Salary; $40,364 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits.

The Early Learning Center is closed for a week in December for the Holiday recess and a week in March for spring break. The last day of this 10-month position is in June. Incumbents will go on COBRA benefits for three (3) months, until the new contract starts back up in late August.
