The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activity (AVCRCA) is responsible for supporting and growing a culture of research and creative activity at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). As the Chief Research Officer at UNK, the AVCRCA oversees the Office of Sponsored Programs, research development, and research integrity (compliance). The AVCRCA will work with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to strategically implement policies, procedures, and programs to support, and increase research and creative activity production and quality on campus. The AVCRCA will have a robust understanding of federal, state, foundation, and agency funding priorities, as well as federal, state, and agency compliance issues. The AVCRCA interacts with other campuses in the Nebraska University system to facilitate collaboration on research and creative activity and funding as well as the development and submission of extramural funding proposals from the Division of Academic Affairs.

  • Manage the development of research and creative activities to target system and external funding, including the development of grant proposals, working with faculty and staff to learn their funding needs, identifying relevant grant programs, supporting proposal writing as appropriate, interacting with program officers, responding to communication from grantors, working with individual faculty and grants accounting on contractual and compliance resolution issues, initiating sponsor change requests, budget revisions, no-cost extension requests, reporting, and grants management. The AVCRCA will also lead efforts in organizing, planning, and writing institutional and campus-level capacity-building grants. This includes supervising and coordinating with any advisory groups for research and creative activity and research division positions including the Office of Sponsored Programs, Director of Research Integrity, and Director of Research Services.
  • Manage the Office of Sponsored Programs. This includes supervising a 1.0 FTE Assistant Director, a 1.0 FTE Contract & Grants Specialist, and a 1.0 FTE Office Associate, and student workers. The AVCRCA will also review grant proposals, develop budgets, submit proposals through paper or electronic systems as appropriate, and act as the signing official for all electronic applications. The AVCRCA also reviews revenue contracts dealing with sponsored programs and acts as a limited signing official.
  • Manage the development of research and creative activities supported through internal competitions. This includes supervising the Director of Research Services who oversees the Research Services Council, INSpRE Core Facility, and Nebraska Tobacco Settlement Funding. Additionally, the AVCRCA will coordinate with the Director of Research Services on strategies for, budgeting of, and oversight of internal funding competitions and research development.
  • Conduct independent research in their area(s) of expertise with the goal of securing external funding. Responsible for all aspects of their independent research program, including securing funds, managing of personnel, publishing findings, etc. Indirect income is expected to be generated.
  • Support UNK research integrity with respect to internal, system and external research compliance policies. The AVCRCA must stay apprised of changing federal, state, system, and internal regulations regarding grants, contracts, and agreements. This includes the protection of human subjects, animals, financial management, biosafety and hazardous materials, data safety, records retention, and research ethics. As such, the AVCRCA, serves as an ex-officio member of the IRB, Conflict of Interest, and Compliance Committees and works directly with the Director of Research Integrity (who is responsible for IRB and IACUC).
  • Serve on campus and system-level committees related to the articulation and implementation of policy relevant to research and creative activity including the pursuit of external funding. Committees may include: Research Services Council, Institutional Review Board, Federal Relations Council, Export Control Committee, Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska Board and others as appropriate. Additionally, as the Senior Research Officer the AVCRCA will represent UNK on the University of Nebraska Senior Research Officers’ Committee.

 

 

Required Qualifications: Terminal degree plus five years of experience in grants management/proposal development, grant writing, and post-award oversight. Managerial experience including task prioritization. Experience with research development and integrity systems and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:  PhD preferred
