Summary:

The VCU Genomics Core, at the Office of Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI), is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual with expertise in molecular biology and genomics to join our team as an hourly Lab/ Research Technician. The main purpose of this position is to conduct and support lab technical services offered by the VCU Genomics Core to the research community.

General responsibilities include laboratory and instrument maintenance, customer training and support; handling and preparation of bio-samples; various advanced molecular biology assays such as library construction and quality control for next generation sequencing.

The position includes daily bench work involving, e.g., nucleic acid extraction, construction of sequencing libraries, sample quality control and sequencing. The successful candidate is expected to indecently perform advanced lab-technical protocols and assays after successfully completion of training.

After appropriate training the successful candidate is expected to independently handle and maintain advanced genomics instrumentation including e.g., Illumina next generation sequencing platforms and 10X Genomics platforms and a broad spectrum of quality control instruments.

The position is highly collaborative. Thus, excellent communications skills to efficiently interact with other core staff, the core leadership, trainees, and investigators is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s of science degree with documented experience in molecular biology and genetics, or equivalent.

Prior experience working in a laboratory environment with excellent hands-on-skills and theoretical knowledge in basic molecular biology including, e.g.: PCR and RT-PCR, RNA/DNA extractions and sample quantification are required. Excellent organizational skills and ability to work cleanly to prevent contamination and sample mix-up.

Strong ability to work independently and within a diverse team of faculty, staff, and trainees. Effective oral and written communication skills. The candidate should have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Evidence of ability to learn new techniques quickly are also essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master of Science degree with documented experience in molecular biology and genetics, or equivalent. Prior experience working in a core facility environment is preferred.

Experience in Next Generation (NGS), with prior hand-on-experience with various types of sample preparation, library construction, quality control procedures and sequencer operation are preferred.

Experience with single-cell/single-nucleus technology is preferred.
