Towson University (www.towson.edu) was founded in 1866, is recognized by U. S. Department of Health Sciences Health Care Management and Public Health Programs

Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, 2 positions

Two 9-month, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor faculty to support the Department of Health Sciences; undergraduate majors include health care management, public health, and allied health. Full-time appointment will begin in August 2023. Successful applicants will have a core focus in one of these fields but show evidence of interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and scholarship in one of these or closely related areas. Faculty may teach at the undergraduate or graduate level based on expertise and the needs of the department. Salary is competitive and includes the State of Maryland benefits package. Rank will be determined based on qualifications at the time of appointment. Faculty are assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units (three credit hours each) per academic year. Primary responsibilities include: 1) TEACHING – provide i) high quality instruction in a variety of health care management and/or public health courses to a diverse population of students, and ii) effective advising and mentorship to students as they matriculate through their program and prepare to enter the workforce; 2) SCHOLARSHIP – development, or continuation, of an independent, focused area of scholarship that includes refereed publications, professional presentations, external funding, and involvement in scholarly projects with faculty and students; and 3) SERVICE – active service participation at the Department, College, University, professional and community levels. Research Doctoral Degree in a health sciences or related discipline. Education and expertise to teach courses across the department; subject areas may include health care management, public administration, health care systems, public health, epidemiology, health education and promotion, public health policy and/or related health sciences content. Evidence of a scholarship agenda focused in an area of specialty in health care/public health or closely related area. ABD applicants will be considered, but appointment will be at the instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2024. Candidates who wish to be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor must have six years of experience teaching in higher education or comparable qualifications and demonstrate a clear and active line of scholarship with outcomes. Department of English

Assistant Professor

Tenure-track, 9-month Assistant Professor position in Technical Communication beginning August 2023. Ph.D. required. ABD applicants considered, but appointment will be at the Instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2024. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in Technical Communication, Professional or Scientific Communication, or New Media. We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research and teaching are anchored to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion and community-engaged practices as they relate to the following areas of studies: Disability advocacy and design, Usability/UX/Accessible design, Information design & production and Web-based content/media. Faculty are assigned an instructional workload of six (6) course units per academic year plus advising 10-15 students in the undergraduate English degree. The candidate will teach and design courses in technical communication to undergraduate non-majors and in the Technical Writing & Information Design track within the M.S. Professional Writing program. Department of Geography & Environmental Planning

Assistant Professor of Geography

Tenure-track, 9-month Assistant Professor position in the Department of Geography and Environmental Planning beginning August 2023. Ph.D. in geography or cognate field. ABD considered, but appointment will be at the Instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 2024. Candidates should have expertise in urban sustainability, broadly defined, and demonstrate ability to contribute to research on urban adaptation to climate change. The ideal candidate will conduct holistic research on physical climate sustainability and adaptability in urban environments that recognizes the uneven vulnerability to climate change caused by social and political inequality. Towson University strives to enhance its research standing in the Carnegie classification. Successful candidates will teach a 3/3 load and be expected to seek external funding as well establish a consistent record of scholarly publications. Successful candidates will also be expected to include students in research when possible and enhance the department’s curricular offerings in the realm of urban sustainability. Successful applicants will be expected to teach courses such as introductory physical geography, environmental impact analysis, and environmental hazards, as well as develop new courses on urban sustainability and adaptation. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to a proposed new interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Environmental, Social, and Homeland Security based in the College of Liberal Arts. Opportunities exist for contributing to other academic programs such as Environmental Science and Studies, Metropolitan Studies, Sociology, and Anthropology. Department of History

Assistant Professor

Tenure-track, 9-month position for an Assistant Professor of the history of the African Diaspora with a specialization in migration and/or refugee studies in the Department of History beginning August 2023. Ph.D. in History or related fields required. ABD applicants considered, but appointment will be at the ‘Instructor’ rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2024. Research specialization in migration and/ or refugee studies of the African Diaspora. Demonstrated excellence in teaching in applicant’s field of specialization. Demonstrated scholarship and active research agenda. Proven ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse student body and to support the University’s Diversity Strategic Plan. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop upper- and lower-level courses in the History of the African Diaspora and in migration and/or refugee studies as well as in their other areas of specialization. The successful candidate will also contribute to related programs, including the African & African American Studies minor and a planned Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in development in the area of human, social and environmental security. Towson University and the Department of History are transitioning to the research-intensive R2 status and candidates will be expected to contribute to this move and to pursue grant-based scholarship as outlined in the University’s mission and strategic plan. The normal teaching load is 3-3, with a reduced 2-3 load for the first year and additional opportunities for reduced teaching load in future years. Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies

Assistant Professor of Modern Judaism

Tenure-track, 9-month Assistant Professor of Modern Judaism in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies beginning August 2023. Ph.D. in Religious Studies. Applicants whose teaching approach demonstrates a commitment to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply. Faculty are assigned an instructional workload of 21 credits (4-3) per academic year and are also expected to maintain a robust research agenda. The successful candidate will be able to teach introductory level courses in Religious Studies, including Introduction to the Study of Religion; Introduction to Judaism; and Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as upper-level courses in their areas of expertise and one course per year in Towson’s MA program in Jewish Studies and Leadership. We especially invite applicants whose work touches on issues of gender and sexuality, racial identity, or lived religious experience; we also invite applicants who could complement and expand the department’s existing offerings in American religion. Assistant Professor, Diversity and Social Justice in Psychology

Tenure-track, 9-month Assistant Professor positions in Psychology with specialization in diversity science, equity, and social justice beginning August 2023. We seek candidates who will increase the department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their research, teaching, mentoring and/or lived experience. The search is open to candidates in any area of psychology. Candidates must hold a Doctorate in Psychology or related field. ABD candidates must complete all degree requirements prior to completion of the first academic year. Applicants must possess and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, research on diversity, equity, and social justice in psychology, and service. The successful applicant will teach new and existing undergraduate and, possibly, graduate courses, including some combination of sociocultural awareness classes (e.g., the psychology of gender, psychology of the Black experience, or cross-cultural psychology), classes in the applicant’s area of expertise, and courses related to research methods. The successful candidate must have the ability to work with diverse populations and to create an inclusive learning environment that is attuned to the educational needs of all students. Evidence of effective teaching experience in a college or university setting with students from diverse backgrounds is highly desirable. The successful applicant is expected to demonstrate research competency as well as evidence that they will continue to grow their research agenda, leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals and the potential to secure external funding. Areas of research interest are open, but we encourage applications from candidates with expertise in the social justice approach and the psychological study of systemic oppression like heterosexism, anti-Black racism, and sexism/cissexism.
