Job responsibilities include teaching, conducting research or creative activity, and providing service to the School of Design and the broader institution. Successful candidates will be appointed as a faculty member in the School of Design and will have teaching responsibilities in the area of Game Design. Faculty will have opportunities to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, in our Game Design programs that are nationally ranked in the Top 50 and Top 25 lists respectively.

DePaul University seeks applicants that reflect the diversity of its student body and the city of Chicago. Applicants who have experience working with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students, and who can contribute to an inclusive climate are encouraged to identify their experiences in these areas in their diversity statement. Women and members of historically underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Who We Are

Located in the heart of Chicago, the School of Design prides itself on nurturing a diverse body of students to become visionary designers who will lead the field. The Game Design program works alongside sister programs in the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media, and we are interested in applicants who can foster collaborations with colleagues in computing, animation, audio, graphic design, cinema, theater, and user experience design. Our faculty builds bridges within and outside DePaul and engages in community outreach that correspond to DePaul's Vincentian Mission. We are a nationally ranked school with a strong track record of collaborating with local high schools, youth centers, museums, galleries, libraries, game organizations, and NGOs. DePaul is on the quarter system, and the teaching load is two courses per quarter. Learn more about the Game Design program: https://www.cdm.depaul.edu/landing/gaming/index.html

Faculty in the School of Design are given many forms of support to develop their careers. Faculty have access to cutting-edge equipment and lab spaces, including several VR and AR production and play spaces, two well-equipped makerspaces, advanced playtesting labs, a print lab, as well as recording, film, stop-motion animation, and motion-capture studios. The recently opened Jarvis Student Center for Innovation and Collaboration provides work and presentation spaces, game development workstations, and opportunities to build connections within and outside the university. The position features well-paid compensation and support for exhibiting and presenting work at festivals, galleries, museums, and conferences. Colleagues in the School of Design are dedicated to mutual success and growth, and we are interested in someone who will add new dimensions to our program.

Qualifications

Candidates are expected to teach game production including design and development courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in which students collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams to iteratively create innovative and entertaining digital games. Candidates must have a terminal degree, such as an MFA or equivalent, in game design, interactive arts, entertainment, computer science or a related field. Exceptions are made for candidates who have already attained recognition for scholarly or other relevant professional achievements and who give promise of continued academic development. Candidates with a well-developed creative research agenda that will inform and advance emerging trends in the field of games will be given preference.

We are especially interested in candidates whose work and interests align with DePaul’s Vincentian mission which calls on the university to address the great questions of our day, promoting peaceful, just, and equitable solutions to social and environmental challenges. Specifically, the School of Design is working to develop curricula that address diversity and anti-racism and respond to contemporary industry trends, societal issues, and dynamic, intersecting design disciplines.
