Director of Strategic Data Analysis for Enrollment

Hiring Range:  $97,000 – $135,000

Department Description:  

The offices within the Enrollment Division (Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Scholarships and Student Aid (OSSA), the Office of the University Registrar, and the Carolina College Advising Corps) focus on increasing the enrollment of outstanding students from North Carolina and beyond, including students who strengthen diversity; meeting the full demonstrated financial need of all undergraduate students who qualify for federal aid; maintaining the integrity of the student record and academic and administrative processes; supporting student success; and providing great care to all who come our way. The work of the Enrollment Division is closely scrutinized by students and their families; by faculty, staff, students, and alumni; by secondary-school teachers and administrators; by lawmakers at the local, state, and national level; and by the media.

Position Description:  

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks innovative and accomplished candidates for the position of Director of Strategic Data Analysis for Enrollment. This senior leadership position reports directly to the Chief of Staff for Enrollment with a dotted reporting line to the Vice Provost for Enrollment. 

The Enrollment Division includes the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, the Office of the University Registrar, and the Carolina College Advising Corps. The Division is committed to enrolling outstanding students who strengthen diversity, meeting the full demonstrated need of all undergraduate students who qualify for federal aid, maintaining the integrity of the student record, supporting student success, and fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The team is dedicated to supporting one another in meeting goals, furthering open and consistent communication, and creating the place where we want to work together. 

The Director is responsible for creating statistical models, analyses, and data-driven approaches that support the University’s strategic enrollment and financial aid goals. This includes analyzing trends and forecasting student enrollment, developing financial aid metrics for planning and monitoring purposes, and creating financial aid and recruitment strategies to increase access for first-generation and low-income students. With the support of other Enrollment data analysts, the Director will create reports and dashboards that enable leadership to define strategies, monitor trends and operations, and advance the University’s mission of recruiting and enrolling outstanding students who will succeed at Carolina and beyond. 

The individual will collaborate with senior leadership and staff in Enrollment; Information Technology Services (ITS); the Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Assessment; and other campus partners. The position will also oversee data integrity and collaborate with campus units and external organizations that are involved in the reporting and analysis of enrollment data.

The ideal candidate will understand the student lifecycle from prospect through graduation; understand trends and research related to admissions, financial aid, diversity and inclusion, access, affordability, and student success; and have demonstrated experience using market and other indicators to develop enrollment and financial aid strategies.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:  

* Demonstrated ability to develop enrollment and financial aid strategies based on complex data and trends.
* Demonstrated ability to translate complex problems and concisely convey data analysis, reports, visual solutions, and recommendations to a variety of audiences verbally and in writing.
* Demonstrated knowledge of data collection, modeling, and analysis techniques.
* Experience with applied statistical approaches, including regression analysis, significance testing, and descriptive statistics. 
* Experience with statistical software and reporting tools, such as Tableau, SAS, SPSS, R, Python, Matlab, Power BI, SQL, Access, or Excel.
* Ability to work independently to investigate questions or issues, as well as within a team setting on collaborative projects, initiatives, and working groups.
* Ability to collaborate with diverse colleagues across campus.
* Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to create and maintain documentation of projects and processes.
* Ability to work within tight time constraints on issues deemed critical by senior leaders and to adapt to changing conditions or requirements, including managing multiple projects and tasks.

Education Requirements:  

Masters’ and 2-4 years’ experience; or Bachelors and 3-5 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience:  

* Broad understanding of trends and concepts in enrollment management, financial aid strategy and associated issues in higher education is strongly preferred. 
* Ability to translate and apply alternative industry knowledge and experiences to these concepts where applicable. 
* Demonstrated experience extracting and combining data from multiple systems, preferably student information systems, client relationship management systems, and financial systems. Familiarity with PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Technolutions Slate, and similar systems is strongly preferred.
