SUMMARY

The Math Prep and Learning Lab Tutorial Coordinator oversees all day-to-day operations of the lab and associated classrooms, ensuring a safe, positive learning environment for students seeking tutorial assistance with developmental level mathematics. This position will focus on delivering holistic developmental math-specific training and tutoring strategies that promote conceptual knowledge and encourage independent, self-actualized learning.

Primary responsibilities include tutoring students individually and in groups, as well as recruiting, assessing, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and mentoring professional and student tutors to assist in the Math Prep and Learning Lab. This position will stay abreast of mathematics and math-related Allied Health and Health Sciences curriculum and work closely with faculty to develop a variety of materials and resources to help support learning and build math confidence within a diverse learning community. The Math Prep and Learning Lab Tutorial Coordinator will also coordinate with Placement Testing personnel and others to advance the use of ALEKS and other tools to better prepare and assist developmental math students, as well as to provide tutoring and preparation for those students who wish to retake ALEKS. Additionally, this position will provide input into the design and development of Summer Bridge and Fast Track programs and actively participate in program implementation to help students gain improved math skills and reduce or eliminate the need for developmental math coursework.

Essential Job Functions

Supervise and coordinate tutoring in the Math Prep & Learning Lab (MPLL).

Be an active participant of the Academic Support and Tutorial Services team. Maintain a collaborative working relationship with the Math Lab Tutorial Coordinator, other tutorial coordinators, and ASTS staff to ensure consistency of campus-wide tutorial services.

Build and maintain a safe, encouraging, and positive learning environment for students.

Establish and ensure MPLL policies are administered appropriately.

Coordinate, manage, and ensure the security of all lab resources including lab computers.

Widely promote availability of MPLL services and utilize EAB Navigate and other tools to aid in scheduling.

Tutor students individually and in groups in developmental level and corequisite math coursework.

Recruit, assess, select, and hire professional and student tutors to assist in the MPLL. Tutors for this lab should be highly qualified with experience in statistics and math for liberal arts, as well as possess a proven track record of successfully assisting developmental education students and those with learning challenges.

Schedule, evaluate, and mentor professional and student tutors.

Monitor budget and approve payroll for tutorial operations.

Participate in the development and delivery of tutor training for all GRCC tutors.

Work in close collaboration with the Developmental Math Coordinator and other Mathematics faculty members to develop MPLL materials and resources, especially for co-requisite courses, and to advance the use of ALEKS and other tools to better prepare and assist developmental math students.

Stay current with the Mathematics Department curriculum, as well as best practices and research in learning theory and practice.

Develop and maintain close working relationships with faculty and staff from other supported academic departments such as Allied Health and Health Sciences. Stay abreast of related course materials, procedures, and content.

Work with Mathematics and other instructors to encourage and support mandatory use of MPLL. Monitor capacity needs and adjust tutor staffing and scheduling as needed.

Coordinate with the Math Tutorial Coordinator to schedule additional assistance from Math Lab professional and student tutors, as needed to augment services.

Develop a strong partnership with Placement Testing and provide tutoring and preparation for those students who wish to retake ALEKS. Widely advertise these services across campus.

Provide input and active support for Summer Bridge and Fast Track program design and implementation in an effort to help students gain improved math skills and eliminate their need for developmental math coursework.

Communicate with instructors and staff regarding individual student needs.

Attend Academic Foundations Program team meetings, as well as Mathematics, Allied Health, Health Sciences, Placement Testing, and other departmental meetings as needed or requested.

Develop content-specific review materials for developmental math and other supported departments.

Develop and deliver holistic developmental math-specific training and tutoring strategies that promote conceptual knowledge; encourage independent, self-actualized learning; and build math confidence within a diverse learning population.

Collaborate with colleagues and pertinent departments regarding space and delivery of tutorial services, including during summer months.

Disseminate information and give presentations about the MPLL to students, faculty, and staff.

Collect and examine lab usage data to determine tutorial needs and drive continuous quality improvement.

Participate in Academic Support Department data analysis and review.

Marginal Job Functions

Conduct program assessments and evaluations as assigned by supervisor.

Update and maintain tutorial web pages and online learning platforms in coordination with other tutorial coordinators.

Attend Academic Support and Tutoring Services meetings and other division or departmental meetings as requested by supervisor.

Work collaboratively with other Student Success offices to continuously enhance services and support student success initiatives.

Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by supervisor.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education/License

Master's degree required in Mathematics, Math Education, Developmental Math, Adult Education, or a closely related field with extensive coursework in college level mathematics.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of experience teaching/tutoring students in Developmental Math (pre-algebra and below) required.

Demonstrated experience in successfully assisting students with developmental education needs and possible learning disabilities.

Experience in program and resource material development.

Experience with web-based educational systems and assistive technology preferred.

Bilingual (English/Spanish or another foreign language) preferred.

Equipment Use/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Experience working with computer software systems.

Ability to utilize and manage virtual meeting software

Experience and ability to use student database software

Physical Demands

Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.

Ability to lift (up to 20 lbs), bend, twist, ambulate around campus.

Mental Demands

Demonstrated content knowledge of courses/department curriculum to be supported.

Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to assist students, faculty, and staff.

Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse educational and demographic backgrounds.

Ability to perform routine and unexpected duties with minimum supervision, this includes management of the MPLL.

Computer literate, with the ability to learn and maintain up-to-date skills in computer technology including: electronic student information systems (PeopleSoft), Microsoft Office, Google Suite, EAB Navigate and other software used by the College to support and/or track student success.

Proven ability to provide excellent customer service to students, staff, and faculty in a demanding work environment.

Enthusiasm and interest in helping and supporting students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

Ability to work under pressure while possessing mature judgment and flexibility with regard to interruptions.

Must use good judgment in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a pleasant and professional manner.

Ability to assist students of various cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.

Understanding and working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, required.
