Sr. Biostatistician

The Key Populations Program within the Center for Public Health and Human Rights in the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health is looking for a highly motivatedSenior Biostatisticianto join a project that is highly responsive to harnessing Big Data to halt HIV given this critical juncture in the HIV response. The overarching goal of this project is to leverage novel methods with large and underutilized data sets to evaluate the potential impact of increasingly specific HIV responses across generalized epidemic settings in Sub-Saharan Africa in reducing overall HIV incidence.

The aims of this study will be achieved via the support of implementing partners, academic partners, governments, and agencies and include building a flexible, comprehensive, and accessible data warehouse collating available HIV-related and relevant auxiliary data for key populations from 2000 onward in Sub-Saharan Africa; employing small area estimation methods and spatial statistics using available direct and auxiliary data to infer population size, prevalence, and engagement in the treatment cascade for key populations; characterizing the transmission population attributable fraction for HIV among key populations in each setting, incorporating differential risks of onward HIV transmission over multiple time horizons; and evaluating routinely collected program data to inform tailoring and adaptation of implementation strategies for delivery of HIV prevention and treatment for key populations.



Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implementing and managing robust, large-scale metadata ecosystems, including data management and the integration of structured data sources to generate epidemiologic insights.
  • Providing analytical support for small area estimation and dynamic transmission modeling.
  • Leading and conducting rigorous cross-country, pooled analyses to characterize and test mediated associations between key variables and HIV-related outcomes across the portfolio of projects.
  • Liaising across the team, working with students by leading analytical working groups and working with JHU (Johns Hopkins University) faculty and staff to design and execute various epidemiological methods and statistical analyses.
  • Disseminating first-author contributions to peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference abstracts, and presentations.
  • Engaging in grant submissions as needed.


Technical Qualifications, Special Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Expertise in designing and developing data cleansing routines, ensuring data quality procedures, including standardization, transformation, rationalization, and link matching, and maintaining workload isolation to allocate resources for querying data.
  • Comfortable working with a diverse team on projects related to human rights, historically marginalized populations, and sexual and gender-diverse communities.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, including timely responsiveness.
  • Demonstrated self-management with the ability to work on multiple tasks with short and/or competing deadlines.
  • Experience in scientific computing/programming and STATA, R, MPlus, or SAS is necessary.
  • Experience with advanced analytic approaches, including structural equation modeling and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related quantitative field, with PhD preferred.
  • Three years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate projects or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Programming proficiency using statistical software (mastery preferred across multiple statistical programs).
  • Demonstrated background in informational architecture.
  • Prior collaborative research experience is a plus.
  • Experience in database software and data management, including working in a cloud-based environment to develop data pipelines and work on multi-Terabyte data sets.
  • Experience working with HIV/AIDS implementation programs (including in Francophone countries) and/or program evaluation and data management is an asset.
