Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems (F2052)

James Madison University’s Department of Computer Information Systems and Business Analytics (CIS & BSAN) is seeking an Assistant Professor for a tenure-track appointment beginning Fall 2023.

About the Department: The Department of CIS & BSAN is an academic unit within the College of Business and has 25 full-time faculty members, over 600 CIS majors, 100 CIS minors and more than 30 business analytics minors. The department offers rigorous curriculum spanning application development, information architecture, database management, cybersecurity, networking, business analytics, consulting, and systems analysis and design. Additionally, the Department supports the College by providing core business classes in information systems, business analytics, and operations management. The Department places a primary emphasis on its undergraduate programs with active learning, hands-on projects, laboratory exercises, case analyses, and engaging classroom experiences designed to prepare graduates to work independently and in team-oriented environments. The CIS program is one of 10 CIS programs in the country accredited by both AACSB and ABET.

 

In addition to high involvement in undergraduate education, departmental faculty members play a vital role in the delivery of the College’s Executive Leadership MBA, Innovation MBA and Information Security MBA programs. Outside the academic community, faculty members maintain strong connections with the consulting industry in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Richmond and interact regularly with members of the department’s Executive Advisory Board.

 

About the College: The AACSB-accredited College of Business includes nationally ranked undergraduate and graduate programs. Five years post-graduation, Virginia residents attending the College had the highest return-on-investment of the 82 business schools included in Poets & Quants 2017 undergraduate business program ranking. In 2018, the Information Security MBA was recognized as #1 in the nation for the Best Online Information Security MBA Programs, and #16 in the Princeton Review’s list of the top 25 Online MBA Programs. Duties and Responsibilities:

Candidates should be capable of teaching information systems courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and of performing scholarly work resulting in publications in quality peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will be expected to substantively engage in academic and community service for the department, college, university, and the profession. The department fosters a collegial and collaborative team environment that supports student success and faculty development and growth. Normal course load is 3 courses per semester.

 

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in information systems, computer science, information technology, cybersecurity or any closely related field is required by the end of the first semester of appointment.
  • Demonstrated evidence of the following is required: teaching effectiveness, constructive communication skills, and a commitment to quality scholarly research in IS and related disciplines.
  • Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching, scholarly work or industry experience spans technological, consulting and managerial areas.
  • The department seeks qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate interest or have successful experience teaching in two or more of these areas: cybersecurity, introduction to information systems, advanced database administration, application development, and programming (Python, C#, or Java).
