Interlochen Arts Academy seeks a dynamic film educator for the Film and New Media division who is eager to contribute to a vibrant program dedicated to the overall development of young visual storytellers. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of visual storytelling and its diverse history, drawn from professional experience as a filmmaker/writer/director and the pursuit of higher education. This is a full time faculty position. The Academy enrolls over 500 students, of which approximately 20% are international, and nearly 25% are ethnic minorities. The Film and New Media Division at Interlochen Arts Academy consists of two tracks - Live Action Film, and Animation. This position will work primarily with the live action Film track, with some courses to film majors, animators and non-majors as electives. The teaching responsibilities for this position include 1:1 advisory to film students, courses related to film, directing for camera, directing actors, critical studies & script analysis, and participate as one of the faculty members of the Production Workshop, a class in which the entire community of film students enroll, in all stages of development of screenplays/productions/thesis/portfolio.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach filmmaking, directing and script/beat analysis
Oversight of the Greenacres documentary project
Teach communication with and blocking of actors for camera, dramatic use of lens
Teach critical analysis skills with a diverse incorporation of inclusive and international films/filmmakers
Provide group and individualized feedback for student films in all stages of production
Attend weekly departmental meetings
Attend weekly Community meetings
Create appropriate curriculum
Collaborate and innovate with other divisions at Academy
Participate in other faculty requirements (e.g. advisory, committee work as appropriate, recruitment, screenings/guest series, film festival, tours, Cinema Collective etc)
Responsible for organizing day-to-day interactions with their respective students in the Film and New Media division, advising story, pre-production, location production.
Help students become independent and capable community minded problem solvers within complex circumstances of filmmaking from script to screen.
Education: MA or MFA preferred, BA or BFA required
Experience: Professional experience expected in a variety of the following aspects of filmmaking: directing and communicating with actors, screenwriting & script analysis, pre production, location production and set etiquette.
Equipment Familiarity: Cinema cameras/lenses, basic lighting packages, sound recorders & microphones
Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:
Final Draft Screenwriting software, Adobe Suite and film editing softwares: Premiere, Final Cut, and Avid
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 35lbs); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation, and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Work is performed primarily in a standard office and classroom environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact. Varies according to specific position within the Film and New Media Division; faculty host daily classroom conversations/presentations and also oversee location productions in a variety of settings in all weather, familiar with safety and appropriate use of standard camera, lighting and sound technology.
