Job Description
The manager will support usage for a set of analytical instruments by researchers in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University (SU). The manager will facilitate the operations, maintenance, training and data analysis for a Cameca SX5 electron microprobe and accompanying equipment that compose a user facility (https://electron-microprobe.syr.edu; academic and industrial users; 50% effort), as well as distributed instruments that include mass spectrometers, a scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction instruments. The manager will design analytical methods, schedule users, assist usage (and data transfer), track usage for billing, and maintain equipment in the microprobe facility. The manager will oversee the general usage, provide technical training, and assist with data analysis for the distributed instruments.
Qualifications
A graduate degree, MS or PhD, in earth science, chemistry or a related field is preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
Candidates should understand the chemistry and structure of minerals, glasses, and engineered materials. Experience in using, maintaining, and troubleshooting electron microprobe instruments and X-ray analytic instrumentation is required. Experience with mass spectrometers is desirable. Candidates are to have experience in supporting users of instrumentation at all experience levels and with managing scheduling and working with instrument vendors.

Responsibilities
- Assisting users and providing training for the electron microprobe facility based upon detailed knowledge of the operations of the electron microprobe facility, the manager will train users of all experience levels, work with users in developing analytical protocols, provide assisted usage, especially at the start and end of analytical runs, and assist with the analysis and transfer of instrument data.
- Assisting with usage and maintenance of distributed analytical equipment. The manager will understand the operations of selected x-ray diffraction equipment, the shared transmission electron microscope at SUNY ESF, and selected shared mass spectrometers and support their operation and maintenance. The manager will provide training for new users on these instruments and assist with usage. The manager will help provide for or coordinate maintenance for the designated instrumentation.
- Maintenance, scheduling/billing for electron microprobe facility. Carry out maintenance or arrange for vendor maintenance for the electron microprobe facility, oversee its usage calendar, and report hours used for billing.
- Other duties as assigned. Duties assigned by the supervisor that are not covered in detail by the previous points, but consistent with the mission of supporting physical facilities that are needed for the College’s mission.
