Type of Position: Part-time Temporary, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule, Hours per week: Varies - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday; 12 hours/week

Pay Grade/Pay Range: $19.97-24.96 *Actual pay depends on qualifications

Position Summary: The Fire Science Lab Instructors assist with teaching skills training for students in the Fire Academy to prepare them to take their state firefighter certification tests. They also proctor the national Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) provided by the Fire Science department.

Required Qualifications:
  • The following state certifications:
    - Hazmat Awareness
    - Hazmat Operations
    - Firefighter I
    - Firefighter II
  • 2-5 experience as a firefighter in a fire department
  • Previous experience should include active structural firefighting
  • Experience in extrication and hazardous material response

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fire Instructor I
  • 5-7 years experience on a fire department
  • Experience training/mentoring

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Skills Training - Assist adjunct instructors in providing skills training for Fire Academy students, properly direct students in the daily maintenance of their firefighting equipment, properly assist adjuncts in teaching student skills lesson for the section being taught, and direct students in stowing equipment at the end of the session.
  • Safety - Lab Instructors will act as safety officer on scene during scenarios and ensure that their students learn to use power-tools in the safe manner. Lab Instructors will ensure that they notify the adjunct of any potential hazards and ensure proper measures are taken to mitigate issues.
  • Certification - Lab Instructors will assist in preparing students for state certification tests, assist in teaching skills according to the state certification standards, and stay current with new teaching methods, certification guidelines, and firefighting standards.
  • Proctor - Lab Instructors will proctor the National Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Lab Instructors properly set up the eight CPAT stations and equipment prior to the test, accurately, safely, and confidentially proctor the test and accurately documents the outcome to ensure test paperwork is properly handled.
