BSU’s School of Music has 350 undergraduate majors, 100 graduate students, and more than 70 artist-teachers. The School of Music is known for its vast and varied performance programs and national leadership in music education. The School offers courses in six distinct areas of study as well as award-winning ensembles and internationally renowned guest artists. The School of Music has one of the nation’s best-equipped recording studios and two state-of-the-art performance halls. BSU encourages and supports community engagement initiatives and values the School of Music’s community-based work. The location of the School of Music, within the College of Fine Arts, provides exciting opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and with external partners such as Netflix.

Reporting to the dean of the College of Fine Arts, the director of the school of music provides leadership, vision, and oversight of the School of Music's graduate, undergraduate, and lifelong learning programs, and its faculty and staff. The director will plan, direct, coordinate, and communicate the academic, operational, budgetary, and promotional activities of the School of Music and collaboratively shape the School to be successful in the changing environment of higher education. The director will be expected to use data and metrics to inform recommendations, decision-making, and evaluations.

The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in music and have a track record of success in teaching, service, scholarly, and/or creative activity that qualifies them for the rank of professor with tenure in the School of Music. Preferred qualifications for the director include a capacity for professional accreditation processes; fundraising and/or grant writing; community engagement, and the ability to work with incentive-based budget models.
