The Opportunity

The Department of Music at MacEwan University is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill a new Full-Time Tenure-Track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting July 1, 2023. This position focuses on MacEwan Music’s latest program of study addition, the Songwriting minor, which is the first of its kind in Canada. Duties include classroom teaching, research and/or creative work, assisting in the development and implementation of the advanced courses attached to the Songwriting area, and overseeing the area, including its courses and course outlines, student progress, and concerts and other events associated with the Songwriting area. The successful candidate will be required to develop curriculum in the core area and teach courses in other areas of the BMus. Scholarly research, creative activity, and service to MacEwan governance at the Department, Faculty and University levels are essential and will form part of the negotiated workload for the successful candidate.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a significant national/international profile as a songwriter with a demonstrable record of creative achievements including recordings and other evidence of creative outputs. The successful candidate will be at once an artist, a researcher (research and research-creation), and a mentor. Skills in other related areas, including music business, music technology, and digital production, will be seen as an asset. The successful candidate may be required to teach in other areas of the Bachelor of Music (BMus), for example, music theory, instrument specialty, ear training, ensemble direction, musicology, and cultural studies.

The successful candidate will have extensive professional experience as a songwriter of contemporary popular music and possess a terminal degree in the field (a graduate degree such as MMus or an equivalent master’s degree). The ability to work effectively in a collegial environment is very important. We encourage all who envision themselves in this position to apply.
