Position Summary: The JCCC Police Officer provides law enforcement and public safety services to the college community to include but not limited to enforcement of criminal statutes, parking and traffic enforcement, crime prevention, patrol activity, accident investigation, resolution of domestic and other disturbances, prosecution support, non-criminal public safety services, enforcement of college policies, rules, and regulations.

Required Qualifications: High School diploma or GED equivalent; must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen; possess valid driver's license issued within the United States and must be a certified and commissioned law enforcement Officer in the state of Kansas. If applying from out of state, must have been an active Law Enforcement Officer within the last five years and pass the Kansas Reciprocity examination(s) within the first year of hire. Candidates must successfully pass polygraph, psychological and physical exams, criminal history, and MVR background checks prior to employment; possess excellent oral and written communication skills along with good organizational skills and the ability to make sound judgment decisions.

Preferred Qualifications: *Johnson County Community College requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Responds to calls, including calls of a non-criminal nature, in a timely and urgent manner to include off-site locations and other police jurisdictions in close proximity to JCCC; participates in enforcement of traffic, parking and personal transportation policy, and smoking regulations; transports prisoners, victims, witnesses, and others as requested; uses defensive tactics and restraint procedures when necessary; participates in court appearances when oral/written testimony is required; assists with medical emergencies and provides first aid as appropriate;
  • Creates written reports in compliance with departmental procedures and presents oral reports as needed; maintains confidentiality and discretion of records, reports, and incidents that are investigated by the JCCC Police Department and governed by college policies, local, state, and federal laws as well as any other record and/or information that is accessible to the department.
  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) by reporting crimes to the designated JCCC Clery Act Officer in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures; collaborate with the Clery Act Officer, Clery Act Team, Title IX Team, and Emergency Preparedness Manager on various campus compliance issues. Actively engages with those on campus as well as maintains communication and rapport within and outside the college community.
  • Maintains an insurable driver's record, qualification and certification with firearm, ASP baton, and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray and CPR/AED certification; returns to work or remains on campus when the college is faced with institutional emergencies; completes 40-hours of required individual training annually.
