Position Summary:
The University of Idaho seeks an expert in human development, family studies and FCS education to join the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences. Human development and family studies (HDFS) is the study of how children, youth, adults, and families develop, change, and face challenges throughout the lifespan (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, elderhood). It is an integral part of any FCS program.

This position is a 9-month, tenure-track position with 40% teaching and advising; 45% scholarship and creative activities; and 15% university service and leadership expectations. This is an Assistant Professor position providing programmatic expertise in family science with emphasis on life stages, including parenting, adulthood, and aging. Because the successful applicant will oversee the FCS teacher preparation program, they must also have an appreciation and understanding of FCS teacher preparation credentialing.

Areas of scholarly focus should relate to strengthening families, resilience, social and emotional competence, social connections, parent engagement, and/or life course events as they specifically affect functioning in adulthood and elderhood - particularly in situations of poverty.

The idyllic University of Idaho is based in Moscow, a growing and lively community with all the benefits and opportunities typically available in a college town, such as excellent public and private schools, restaurants, and free public transportation as well as a plethora of diverse sports, world-class outdoor activities, and performing and visual arts offerings. This position will be offered at a competitive salary level commensurate with the national market and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in human development and family studies or related discipline. ABD applicants must have degree requirements completed at time of hire.
  • Graduate-level training in the broad scope of family studies and human development.
  • Experience conducting interdisciplinary work within the realm of adult development, work and family constructs, aging, elderhood, and/or poverty.
  • Experience obtaining internal and/or external funding.
  • Holds Certified Family Life Educator credential (National Council on Family Relations) or willingness to acquire this certification upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Classroom teaching experience at the college or university level with evidence of effectiveness and excellence.
  • Experience with and understanding of FCS teacher preparation requirements and credentialing. Experience with FCCLA. Experience working on teams.
  • Experience with distance education methodologies and online instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to involve undergraduate students in faculty-directed research and/or mentor undergraduate students in independent research.
