Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for the overall direction, leadership and management of the Accounting Office. This position is responsible for the supervision of all Accounting Office professional and administrative employees.  This position recommends policy and procedure on all fiscal matters, maintains constant awareness for the potential of fiscal problems and fraud, and informs and advises appropriate managers in a timely fashion.  The Controller works with all fiscal auditors and represents the College or Accounting Office in a variety of meetings or functions.  The Controller oversees internal controls to ensure proper accounting and to minimize the potential for abuse or fraud. 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited college/university. 
  • At least five years of progressively responsible accounting and supervisory experience in a medium to large accounting department. 
  • Experience working in an Enterprise Resource Planning software.  
  • Knowledge and understanding of GASB regulations. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities 
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA license. 
  • Public accounting experience.  
  • Experience in higher education, non-profit or government setting. 
  • Previous experience as a Controller. 
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.  
  • Workday experience. 
Major Responsibilities
  • Supervise staff and ensure that departmental work requirements are fulfilled.  Perform and oversee staff evaluations.  Oversee team building activities within the department.  Assist with hiring of all staff. 
  • Determine departmental goals and provide education and training to ensure all staff are equipped to meet the requirements of their job.  Oversee any disciplinary actions necessary within the department. 
  • Oversee process improvement and potential areas for change or gains in efficiency/effectiveness within the department. 
  • Oversee online security for all banking, grant financial draws, the Colorado Operations Resource Engine (CORE), and other systems used by the department. 
  • Responsible for the development, maintenance and integrity of the centralized automated accounting systems including the chart of accounts.  This includes the accounting for all financial transactions in the areas of: cash receipts, cash disbursements, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, state appropriations, grants, endowment funds, financial aid, construction projects, fixed assets, inventories and bond funds. 
  • Preparation of the annual financial statements and footnotes for the College.  Responsible for compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Governmental Accounting Standards, College Fiscal Rules, federal and state tax laws and Bond Resolutions. 
  • Maintain a reconcilable set of accounting records on the State of Colorado’s enterprise financial system (CORE). 
  • Manages all long-term debt for proper accounting, compliance, debt payments and reporting.  Assist with any bond issuances or refunding. 
  • Oversee external reporting including but not limited to:  State gifts report, Continuing Disclosure Report, IPEDs, Moody’s reporting, US News, Higher Learning Commission, and responses to legislative inquiries. 
  • Prepare ratio analyses for the Higher Learning Commission and the Joint Budget Committee for the Colorado State legislature. 
  • Represents the College on the Financial Advisory Committee composed of Controllers at Higher Education Institutions throughout Colorado. 
  • Serve on the Finance Committee of the College determining policy and procedures for all financial matters within the College. 
  • Serve on the Administrative Systems Management Team overseeing the ERP system and other IT systems. 
  • Serve on the Board of Trustees Investments Committee as staff.

Compensation

The salary range is $97,000 to $108,000 plus a comprehensive benefits package .
