Position Summary

The Department of Gender, Women, and Sexualities ( GWS ) Studies at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Gender, Women and Sexualities Studies. Of special interest are GWS scholars whose research and teaching focus on trans/queer studies, with a secondary focus on decolonial and/or critical race theory frameworks, health, mutual aid, practices of care and/or social justice organizing. The courses to be taught include core courses such as GWS 1030 Introduction to Social Justice and Decoloniality, GWS 1550 Introduction to Transgender Studies, GWS 1200 Multicultural Study of Sexualities and Genders, GWS 2100 Women of Color, GWS 2200 Feminist and Queer Research methods, and upper division courses in the candidate’s area of expertise.

Faculty are on 9-month contracts with the possibility of optional summer teaching. The successful candidate will teach both online and campus classes, advise and mentor undergraduate students, engage in scholarly activities, and provide service responsibilities to the department, college, university, profession, and community. In addition to teaching, research and service, the faculty member will participate in the development of a new minor in “Decolonial and Social Justice Studies,” an “Online Sexuality Studies Minor” and “Feminist/ Queer/ Trans Studies Labs.” The department is housed in the Gender Institute for Teaching and Advocacy ( GITA ), a unique office on the Auraria campus. GITA offers both academics (one major and two minors) and direct support services to students targeted by sexism and other intersecting oppressions.

Duties/Responsibilities

Assistant Professor responsibilities include:
  1. Teaching 18 credit hours per academic year. Teaching involves activities that impart knowledge and critical thinking skills to students. It includes preparing for courses assigned, assessing student progress, conducting curricular review, holding office hours, communicating with students in a timely fashion, and integrating technology as appropriate. Teaching may include classroom, online, online/hybrid instruction.
  2. Advising students. This involves staying informed of University and College policies while assisting students in assessing career options, choosing a degree program, successfully completing their senior thesis and degree, and obtaining employment or graduate school placement.
  3. Engaging in service to the department, college, profession, and/or community.
  4. Pursuing and maintaining an active research agenda, publishing per the departmental guidelines, and presenting at professional conferences.


Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Gender, Women and Sexualities/Feminist Studies or related interdisciplinary field. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, however, the degree must be conferred before August 1, 2023
  • Higher education teaching experience in Gender, Women, and/or Sexualities Studies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to teach online courses
  • Demonstrated advising experience with focus on holistic support for a diverse urban student population including (but not limited to) students of color, LBGTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans, and English-language learners
  • Demonstrated research involvement in the field of Gender, Women, and Sexualities Studies specific to focus on queer/feminist decolonial studies, critical race studies, and/or transnational feminisms
  • Experience leading service-learning projects integrating feminist theory and practice and/or social justice-oriented community networking
