The ASUM Office of Transportation invites applications for a Transit Operations Supervisor . This position works independently with minimal or no direct supervision; manages own schedule accounting for both long-term projects and weekly routine tasks; performs some of the duties below this level, as needed, and is considered an “expert” in the area of work. The Supervisor builds and maintains a work atmosphere of trust and respect by establishing open communication among team members; taking steps to prevent destructive conflict and handling conflict in an appropriate manner; listening and responding appropriately to the needs, feelings, and capabilities of all individuals.

This position hires, trains, and supervises up to 40 student bus drivers, temporary staff, bike mechanics, and interns; processes new hire paperwork; manages payroll, scheduling and personnel issues. Assesses performance and coaches student employees in areas pertaining to improvement of driving skills, customer service skills, and conflict resolution among passengers.

This position dispatches buses and drivers; responds to drivers’ on-route situations and emergencies; relays instructions to drivers as needed due to weather, mechanical issues, customer service and personnel challenges, and any other condition that requires ad hoc alterations in the duties of drivers.

This position manages training programs; develops training schedules and detailed lessons for trainees; teaches the fundamental skills needed for new drivers to earn a commercial driver license (CDL), operate UDASH routes, and learn the intricacies of a varied UDASH bus fleet. Trains lead drivers to instruct lessons and provides regular feedback. Prepares and leads all policy trainings and makes updates and modifications to the training and policy manuals. Trains night and weekend transit supervisor how to conduct training activities.

The Supervisor assists director in short- and long-term planning through participation in routine staff meetings; participates on and occasionally facilitates campus-wide and external boards and committees; assists director with policy decisions, route changes, updating long-range documents, and exploring new programs and services. Develops and leads professional and educational presentations; conducts promotional activities. Oversees department website, maintaining, editing, and adding content as needed.

The Supervisor manages bike rental fleet; processes rentals, updates inventory, and performs minor bike maintenance; manages schedule and tasks of two bike mechanics; and facilitates bike program long-range planning. This position also manages vehicle fleet maintenance; manages procurement of contracted vehicle maintenance services; manages contracts and vendor relationships for vehicle maintenance; manages parts acquisition including inventory and cost control measures; manages scheduling of preventative maintenance and emergency repairs of UDASH bus fleet; maintains accurate repair records and assess trends in repair costs and procedures; manages repair budget and cost estimates; and performs minor vehicle maintenance in-house.

This position purchases supplies and manages inventory of supplies needed for successful operation of the UDASH bus fleet.

This position serves as UDASH safety officer; stays current on and implements UM, Federal Transit Administration (FTA), and Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Americans with Disabilities Act rules and regulations; manages toxicology screening program; investigates crashes, incidents, and collisions; and prepares incident reports and works with UM Risk Management to claims following incidents; investigates customer service complaints.

Periodically assists director with special projects beyond the typical duties and complexity of the position.

Required Skills
  • Possess an understanding of the intricacies of public transit
  • Ability to train drivers for a CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements
  • Ability to respond on nights and weekends to all transit emergencies
  • Ability to learn university policies including University Drug and Alcohol policies for commercial drivers
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations for commercial drivers, ADA sensitivity training, and CPR and first aid training
  • Some knowledge of diesel engines and buses is critical
  • Ability to keep maintenance records
  • Ability to assist with scheduling drivers
  • Ability to communicate clearly with the road supervisor
  • Ability and willingness to clean buses and bus garage
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills
Minimum Required Experience
  • High school diploma (or equivalency) in addition to three (3) years of experience in public transportation operations with progressively greater degrees of responsibility; or any combination of experience and education
  • Possess or be able to obtain the following licenses, certifications, and/or abilities immediately upon hire:
    • Valid Montana Class B Commercial Driver License with passenger and airbrake endorsement
    • Drug and alcohol reasonable suspicion training
    • Federal Transit Administration (FTA) trainings and certifications in transit supervision; minimally including the National Transit Institute (NTI) Fundamentals of Transit Supervision course
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in business, communications, transportation planning, or a related field; or associate’s degree or higher in diesel technologies
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in transit bus maintenance
  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA) certifications relating to transit supervision

Mon-Fri 9:00am to 6:00pm; variable weekends & on-call.

Salary: $22.505/hr – * Current employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and may be different from the posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .*

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
