Miyazaki International College (MIC) is a four-year liberal arts college accredited by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The first liberal arts university in Japan to use English as the medium of instruction, MIC is international in scope, grounded in the social sciences and humanities, and emphasizes the study of world-wide human problems and issues in a spirit of collaboration, inquiry, and multicultural understanding. The fundamental purpose of MIC is to develop international citizens conversant in Japanese and foreign cultures and fluent in English.

Miyazaki International College is currently seeking candidates for a faculty position (open rank) in Political Science. We are particularly interested in strong generalist candidates. Area of specialization is open, but candidates must be able to teach 4-6 undergraduate level courses including but not limited to Introduction to Political Science, Politics of Japan, Comparative Foreign Policy, International Political Economy, and at least 2 seminars. Candidates must also be able to supervise the graduation thesis and teach graduate level courses in International Politics (omnibus).

Assignment to begin April 1, 2023. Salary is 4.0 – 6.5 million yen commensurate with experience and includes benefits. Two-year contract, renewable up to the age of 60 with satisfactory biennial reviews.

Social insurance will be covered by the Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Universities in Japan and employment insurance. Individual Research Funds and travel expenses provided.

 

Qualifications for this position:

Applicants must have completed a Master’s or a Ph.D. in Political Science. Applicants must be able to teach in English. Teaching experience with second language learners is preferred but not necessary. This is principally a teaching position, and the majority of our students are non-native speakers. Japanese ability is not required, though can help the application.

Applicants must also be willing to participate actively in education and research, institutional affairs, community outreach and other institutional activities.

Nationality is not an issue.

After reviewing the submitted documents (first stage screening), shortlisted candidates will be contacted for a follow-up interview (second stage screening). Only candidates who have passed the first screening will be notified. Interviews are sometimes conducted via Zoom. Expenses for in-person interviews shall be borne by the applicant.
