Assistant or Associate Professor - Department of Art and Design Education (71102)

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Description:
Pratt Institute invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Design Education to begin Fall 2023. The ideal candidate has significant experience and achievement as a PK-12 educator with demonstrated expertise in clinical supervision and curricular innovation, knowledge of systemic issues relevant to PK-12 arts education, a passion for building relationships with diverse students, and an interest in nurturing school partnerships throughout the NYC area.

The Department of Art and Design Education (ADE) at Pratt Institute offers a BFA, BFA/MA, MA and Advanced Certificate in art and design education, with initial teaching certification, visual arts, all grades, and two undergraduate minors: Museum and Gallery Practices and Teaching Art and Design in NYC. A vibrant community of scholars, artists and educators, our alumni have gone on to teaching and leadership positions in schools and community-based organizations in New York City city and across the country. The historic Saturday Art School, a community program that offers studio-based instruction to children ages 6-18 years old, has been the teaching laboratory of the Department of Art and Design Education since the early 1950's and it continues to thrive.

The Department is distinguished by its interdisciplinary perspective and recognized internationally for its innovative approaches to connecting artistic practice and education. We offer an integrated curriculum that intertwines studio thinking with learning theories and current research in the field. Students develop a firm grounding in content area knowledge in the arts and design disciplines together with expertise in pedagogical strategies and teaching techniques. Students design and provide educational experiences in a reciprocal relationship with New York City public schools, community, and cultural organizations. In these settings, they are encouraged to address complex social issues, culturally relevant pedagogy, experiment with new ideas and materials, and consider themselves collaborators and partners in addressing the possible role of art and design in social change and transformation. The department is housed in the School of Art.

Pratt School of Art provides a rigorous, student-centered education that emphasizes risk-taking and exploration. We are a dynamic community of students, faculty, and staff committed to meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Our programs develop criticality through a mutual, sustained process of critique, articulation, and reflection, and foster an interdisciplinary environment that allows students to broaden their creative thinking and pursuits. Guided by outstanding faculty, students learn to integrate theory and practice, develop their creative voices, and actively engage with the world.

Located on Pratt's historic 25-acre campus in the culturally diverse neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, Pratt is an internationally recognized school of architecture, art, design, and information, which draws students from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. We are committed to advancing diversity and inclusion in our curriculum as well as in the ranks of our faculty, students, and staff, and seek applicants who can contribute to the furtherance of these goals.
