The Communication Studies program at American University’s School
of Communication invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track
position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a starting date
of August 1, 2023. Applicants should have a PhD or anticipate
completing a PhD by August 2023 in Communication, Media Studies,
Science and Technology Studies, or a related field. The successful
candidate will teach in the School’s doctoral, master’s, and
The search committee seeks candidates who are emerging or
established leaders in Communication or related fields, who have
promising records of publication (and/or funding) that are driven
by the application of empirical methods that are primarily
quantitative. Ideal candidates will bring expertise in
quantitative, data analytical, mixed, and/or emerging methods. In
scholarship, ideal candidates will be working at the intersections
of data, media, and race and identity. The successful candidate
will be deeply familiar with new sources and structures of data and
be able to evaluate and critique the role of data as a medium of
social power in an increasingly networked society.
With this position, the Communication Studies program seeks to
broaden its leadership, scholarship and teaching. The successful
candidate will be expected to teach and mentor students in the
doctoral program; teaching duties will extend as well to
undergraduate classes and to the master’s program in Media,
Technology and Democracy.
