The Gallagher Law Library is one of the largest law libraries west of the Mississippi. We seek to hire an Assistant Librarian to implement and oversee a controlled digital lending program, collection development, cataloging, acquisitions, interlibrary loan, and document delivery.  

The candidate selected will join a team of law librarians who provide high-quality, wide-ranging services to law library users. Core duties include implementing and overseeing a controlled digital lending program, collection development, cataloging, acquisitions, interlibrary loan, and document delivery. This position reports to the Head of Technical Services. Librarians are encouraged to be professionally active. We look forward to hiring a collection management librarian who is a self-starter and enjoys collaborating on a wide variety of projects. This appointment has a twelve month service period and is initially for two years with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2023.

Responsibilities and duties: 

  • Work with the Head of Technical Services to develop and implement the law library’s acquisitions approval plan
  • Administer the law library’s selection and acquisitions systems, such as Hein Green Slips and GOBI, and participatory workflows to facilitate monograph purchasing and serve as final selector of monographs for non-core legal subjects
  • Collaborate with public services law librarians and other subject matter experts on selecting monographs for core legal subjects
  • Lead the Collection and Resource Management Group meetings, during which decisions are made related to collection development, subscriptions, stacks maintenance, library maintenance agreements, etc.
  • Coordinate with UW Libraries on original cataloging, resource sharing, and other collection needs as warranted and manage the internal copy cataloging workflow
  • Facilitate trials, analyze usage statistics, and make recommendations for database and subscription
  • Coordinate with law faculty and the Registrar throughout the year to procure material for course reserves
  • Manage discreet special collections digitization projects and technical services intern projects
  • Oversee the law library’s participation in the Federal Depository Library Program, including transitioning to an electronic access model
  • Coach and train law librarianship students and student employees
  • Other duties as assigned

The University of Washington and the Service Employees International Union, Local 925 (SEIU 925) are currently in the process of negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement. This position is subject to the collective bargaining agreement and represented by SEIU 925. Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • MLIS (or equivalent degree) from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Knowledge of best practices related to collection development, acquisitions, digital resources, interlibrary loan, and document delivery
  • Proficiency with applicable technology, including integrated library systems, ILLiad/Tipasa or similar resource sharing application, OCLC WorldCat and WorldShare
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to think critically, solve problems, and manage multiple concurrent projects

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of legal materials
  • Experience working with digitization, interlibrary loan, and cataloging
  • Experience working in an academic law library
  • Knowledge of controlled digital lending principles
  • Experience working with student employees
