Position Description

 

The newly established Center for Energy Research and Policy Research (CERP), part of the Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University, is seeking to appoint an open rank Research Professional. 

 

This is a full-time, fiscal-year (12-month), fixed-term, non-tenure track academic professional appointment (renewable on an annual basis).  Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Research Professional, Associate Research Professional, or Research Professional.  Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience, education, and ability to perform duties related to the work of CERP. 

 

The CERP Research Professional will conduct/coordinate energy-related research activities (drawing upon personal expertise/background in some/all of Economics, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Finance, and Public Policy) working mostly in a team context, although some individual work may be necessary depending upon the size and nature of the project.  Candidates with experience in working on energy/energy policy issues are encouraged to apply regardless of background. 

 

CERP’s mission is to spark robust debate around energy in the American Southwest and thus inspire policies and feasible outcomes that promote long-term social, economic, and environmental sustainability. 

 

The Research Professional will play an integral role in the team that uses/coordinates multidisciplinary expertise to carry out (both quantitative and qualitative) research on energy-related issues.  Examples of current CERP projects include (but are not limited to): 

 

  • The benefits and costs of moving to a 100% clean energy future in Arizona The local economic impacts of the closure of coal generating stations How a more secure energy sector may be achieved in the American Southwest

The Research Professional will also be involved in report writing, promoting CERP’s output (through presentations and other interactions) and activities related to the successful administration of CERP.

 

Submitted applications should address a strong interest in energy-related issues; experience in one or more of CERP's core competencies (especially Economics, Environmental Science/Sustainability, and Public Policy); an ability to work with data and possession of/willingness to acquire relevant modeling skills; strong writing and presentation skills; and a desire to work in a small, focused, nurturing team.

 

 

 

Essential Duties

 

  • Conducts/coordinates multidisciplinary (quantitative and qualitative) research both in a team and as an individual.  (Senior Research Professionals may serve as primary investigator with leadership expectations and primary responsibility for end-to-end execution.) Assists in the planning and design and preparation of research proposals. Crafts and writes reports and project briefs/proposals. Makes presentations to various CERP stakeholders – public, policy makers, utilities, environmental advocacy groups etc. Collects, evaluates and analyses data (possibly creating and managing databases) using appropriate statistical skills. Uses/develops appropriate modeling skills (e.g. input-output analysis, EXCEL modeling) in working on projects. Conducts literature searches. Responds to requests for research information from the media and general public and writes news releases. Assists in the dissemination of CERP work via social media, print or other media outlets.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications

 

MS or PhD in Economics, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Sustainability, or a discipline related to the duties of the Research Professional outlined by time of appointment.

 

 

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Demonstrated experience on current and future energy-related issues. Prior experience as a researcher and demonstrated experience or interest (dependent on rank) in one or more of: Economics, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Finance, Public Policy or Sustainability. Demonstrated experience/interest in energy issues and the overall energy landscape of the American Southwest (the energy sector and related institutions). (Dependent on rank) Demonstrated experience researching and developing resource materials to meet needs for presentations, research proposals, and, research papers. Demonstrated experience in Excel (or similar) modeling. (Dependent on rank) Demonstrated experience in using I/O models (e.g. IMPLAN, REMI). (Dependent on rank) Demonstrated experience evaluating/analyzing research and other literature and drafting research materials. (Dependent on rank)
