Summary
The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) at the University of Michigan invites applications for an Instructional Consultant position. This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant, collaborative Center with extensive partnerships on teaching and learning across U-M and beyond and a strong DEI focus. Applicants with a range of background and experience (such as DEI, curriculum, online pedagogy, active learning, STEM teaching, among many others) are welcome to apply. Consultants across the center are committed to promoting equity-focused and inclusive teaching in programs, workshops, and consultations.

We may hire up to two consultants in this process. Candidates with additional experience may be considered for the title of Assistant Director.

CRLT is the nation’s first teaching center. We are dedicated to the support and advancement of evidence-based learning and teaching practices and the professional development of all members of the campus teaching community. CRLT is part of the Provost’s Office and partners with faculty, graduate students, postdocs, and academic leaders across U-M’s 19 schools and colleges to develop and sustain a university culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and creates equitable learning environments in which diverse students and instructors can excel. The University is currently embarking on the second stage of a strategic initiative on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Responsibilities
An Instructional Consultant will plan and facilitate workshops and programs focused on a range of topics (e.g., equity-focused teaching, group work and active learning, grading and assessment); develop new programs to meet emerging needs; consult with individual instructors about pedagogy, course design, assessment, and other teaching-related matters; conduct midterm student feedback sessions; and develop written resources to be shared with instructors. Instructors at U-M are teaching primarily in-person, but also in remote and online modalities. Likewise, we consult with instructors in multiple modalities. All CRLT consultants are provided professional development opportunities to help develop their skills and connect with a network of educational development professionals at CRLT and beyond.

Required Qualifications

• A demonstrated commitment to furthering equity, inclusion, social justice, and access in higher education
• Strong skills and knowledge base for consulting with a broad range of U-M instructors with diverse social identities, cultural and educational backgrounds, institutional roles, and disciplines on pedagogical challenges and strategies, course design, and approaches to assessing student learning
• Strong workshop or equivalent facilitation skills
• Familiarity with literature relevant to educational development work, including inclusive and equitable teaching practices
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Project management skills, including the ability to meet timelines and prioritize multiple tasks
• A completed doctorate or the equivalent. Candidates for the doctorate will be considered with an established defense date of May 2023 or earlier
• A record of successful teaching in a university or college setting
